I am a researcher working in Japan with an interest in Japanese robots. I`m writing a book on the topic and, in the meantime, I keep a modest blog on the topic here; Japanese robots There are some really interesting robots being developed in Japan. Nice blog
although to be honest i am totally unimpressed even by asimo
i watched their performance at robodex a few years ago and all the robots were pretty dull as they were limited in function
but as batteries and micropchips get smaller and more powerful i can see the robots getting more functional

Some of the robots I have seen are mechanically very impressive: Great vision, able to run (in a manner), balance, pick up fragile objects etc. Some of the `bots using shape-memory alloy can bounce around with almost animal-like agility.Robot bodies will, I am sure, continue to progress apace. The real problem is the AI. Making a truly autonomous robot that can function on a level significantly above that of an insect seems much harder than anybody expected.
