Hello everyone
I'm half Japanese living in the UK. I have an English name and I speak very little Japanese however I have always been fascinated with my Japanese ancestry and have visited Japan several times.
My husband and myself are expecting a baby girl and I'd really like to give her a Japanese name or a mixed English-Japanese name For example:
My English Grandmother was called 'Kitty' and My Japanese Grandmother was called 'Kiyomi'. I've thought about combining the two names to make 'Kitomi' or 'Kittomi'...What do you think?
Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Not really a Japanese name but then again, Japanese can be flexible. Usually Japanese names do not have small っ in the pronounciation.

Both "Kitomi" and "Kittomi" sound like a family name, not a given name.

Thank you for letting me know I thought it would've been nice to mix my grandmothers names as they were both very special to me but perhaps it isn't such a good idea after all!

If anyone has any suggestions please let me know

I'd just have said use one as her first and one as a middle name, but it might be a bit overly alliterative in this case. Unless Kitty also had a middle name that would go well with Kiyomi? Or, if anybody in the family knows what kanji Kiyomi used for her name, you could look at other girls names that use some of the same kanji.

Some girl's names that are less common than your typical Keiko or Yuka, etc (all are names of current and former students or their mothers so only these come to mind atm):

Kirika
Urumi
Kurumi
Shinobu
Koito
Yuria
Moena
Yasue
Sanae

I am sure there are a plethora of others out there also.

Unlike "Kitomi" or "Kittomi", all those examples can be easily recognized as a female give name. (Well, only Urumi sounds a bit uncommon, though.) Shinobu, Yasue and Sanae are very common given names as same as Kiyomi, Keiko or Yuka, by the way.

You are probably much more learned on the subject than I am. I was only recalling from memory. Maybe from your experience they are common but not from mine. I have only know one of each (Shinobu, Yasue, Sanae) at least that I can recall.

Nope, I don't pay much attention to who's who in Japan. Too busy with work and other stuff. I may have seen their faces before but if you asked me their names I wouldn't have a clue.
