I know that they are hard on "outsiders" getting a citizenship in Japan and there's a limit of people they let in and stuff..

But my question is, what are the requirements? For Canada, we only need to live here as a Parmanent Resident for at least 3 years and you can apply for Canadian Citizenship and you'll get in for sure, if you have no criminal records and all.

Do they allow dual citizenships?
 
Contrarily to Canada, Japan does not require people to first become permanent resident before getting citizenship. If you are married to a Japanese, you can aply for citizenship after 4 years in Japan (with a spouse visa) OR for a permanent visa.

Japan does not allow dual citizenship. If you become Japanese, you lose your previous citizenship(s).

When I read the link posted by Mikawa. it says an Alien has to live in Japan for 5 - 10 consecutive years to apply for citizenship. Is this under a work visa or what?
 
Naturalization is the process of becoming a citizen of a country other than your "native" country. Immigrating and becoming a citizen to put it simply.

The Japanese does not specify what visa you need to have for the necessary time period, so I would assume that does not technically matter.

I find this all very helpful. Thanks for having a thread on immigration. ^^

My brother told me a while ago that there was no way for me to become a Japanese citizen if I tried to... It made me upset, because I never said I wanted to and he assumed something, so I wanted to find out if he was right or not. And I'm glad that he's not.

I'm actually considering this, but it's probably ridiculous, I'm only 14 now... I'll look into it more fully once I'm older. But this is a great place for information on immigration, and I thank you again.
 
Btw, I have only recently understood the difference between citizenship and nationality (well I think).

But then, you would have to give up your Canadian citizenship. That is a very high price to pay. It is the best passport in the world. I would even renounce my British one to keep my Canadian if I were put in the position of having to choose one.

By the way, seeing your avatar, are you of Japanese heritage? Maybe you could help me with my Japanese sentences that I have placed in the nihongo thread. I am having major structural problems in my Japanese writing, and we are all having fun picking it appart as I learn.
