Japan -> China -> Japan VISA concerns

I'm planning to visit Japan this summer as a U.S.A. tourist under the visa waiver program. At the last minute, I've decided that I want to visit mainland China for 1 week during my stay in Japan. If I am granted a visa to enter China, my only concern is re-entry into Japan.

I don't think re-entry permission applies to the visa-waiver program, since there is no visa. Are there any problems or specials steps I should be aware of if I enter Japan under the waiver program, leave for 1 week, and then attempt to re-enter Japan? Do people do this all the time?

I don't foresee any problems. You come as a tourist, you leave as such, then come back. If immigration asks why you were gone only a week before you returned, just explain why you NEEDED to be in China then. As long as you don't stay 90 days before you visit China, I think everything will be ok.

aye, i think its not exactly a visa waiver. called an ETA, electronic travel authority, it acts as a visa between participating countries issued automatically when you get your tickets. so therefore it should reset when you re-enter japan giving you another 90 days from then...
