A Toyota "bonnet bus" from the 1960s has been brought back into service on the Izu Peninsula after undergoing a significant facelift to take sightseers to the mountainous Amagi region. The fully restored vehicle was unveiled on 25 July at Tokai Bus Co.'s Shuzenji office.

The bonnet bus was built in 1964 and became the symbolic face of Tokai Jidosha Co., the bus firm's parent company based in Ito, which recently marked its 105th anniversary. The vehicle is named "Izu no Odoriko" (伊豆の踊子, "The Izu Dancer") after the famous short story of Nobel prize winner Kawabata Yasunari (more on the story in our piece on the Kawazu Falls).
The bonnet bus will only operate on weekends in August but will not serve the old Amagi Pass route to avoid straining the old engine.
