that I say unto you all,

the elementary school at which I work has finally bought and is installing air conditioning!

Now this may not be a big thing to you with heating/air conditioning systems, where your summers are spent running from your air conditioned houses, to your air conditioned cars, to the air conditioned stores, but in Japan, where many buildings lack integrated systems, summers and winters can be a severe test of will. Most t-shirst don't escape without pitstains in a year or two...

If you hate sweat, don't come to Japan in the summer - you will die.

It was 30 degrees C in classrooms yesterday. For those of you in who still use F (yes, I am looking at you Americans), 30 C = damn hot.

I know no one here will be able to share in my air conditioned joy, but now I can post on JREF and not have to catch the sweat before it ruins my keyboard.

The hand controlled, battery operated systems usually work alright as well, although I can never figure out that damn timer -- or even if there is supposed to be one :?

Its not so much the heat, if it gets to 35 here in summer (often) school is out Gets up to 43 on a reaaaal hot day.

But thats nothing compared to Japan. "Yah, 30, I can handle that". Yet my god, the hudity... you cant get cool!! You just sweat and sweat and sweat!!

There is no air-conditioning in German schools (what I know of). Not that it would really be necessary, since the temperature is rather moderate for the most time.

In the federal state where I live there is a rule that when temperature reaches 27ﾂｰ C in the classroom, school is out.

Wish I worked in Germany...another hot one today.

The idea with not having air conditioning (or good heating in the winter) for students is that it will make them soft. Of course this is not a home-grown idea, but rather some big cat sitting in an office of the Education Ministry in Tokyo. So they don't provide funds to cool the school in the summer - it is a local responsibility, if at all.

Of course that office where our big cat friend works is air conditioned...
