Ishidai (イシダイ), Barred knifejaw or striped beakfish, is native to the north-western Pacific Ocean, though records exist from other localities in the eastern Pacific. It has black and white stripes and a purple hue. It's not a common fish but is popular to serve as sushi and sashimi. Ishidai is a white-fleshed fish (白身 shiromi) with a mild flavour and firm texture.
It is also known as "Tsunami fish." One specimen travelled over 6,500 kilometres to the other U.S. west coast. Sheltered by a Japanese fishing boat after being tossed out to sea by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, it crossed the Pacific Ocean. As of December 2013, the fish resided at the Seaside Aquarium in Seaside, Oregon.
