Yes, it is not a racist slur, but it is certainly often used as an exclusionary device by the Japanese, time and again.

Maciamo, this is not only too much of a blanket statement, it is leading the thread way off topic; I'm afraid.
No. The word 'gaijin' is not a racist slur though it can be used as a vehicle for that which is of such emotion.
My comment was obviously in reference to Maciamo's observation on Japanese -foreigner personal relationships and predicated on the non-native person that is actually seeking to be accepted. If you are still ambivalent about that....well it explains a lot why this thread has turned out the way it has...

Ok, seriously now.

It can only be seen as an exclusionary device if one is trying to become Japanese. Are you? If so, you will have a very hard time climbing up the birth canal of some unsuspecting Japanese woman just so that you may jump back out and scream "hey, I'm Japanese now!"

That is as close as you would ever come to being an actual Japanese person.

Hell, be happy with who you are and quit trying to be someone you are not.

Japan was ever nippon Empire,we accepted korean and taiwanese.

funny thing is,many japanese consider the taiwanese who were former japanese are compatriots because they have a same mentarity of the japanese.

tribe ? no..........

Of-course,only as Japanese imperial subjects though.Wait,Hong Kong born smart-gal entertainer Agnes Chan was well known in Japan back in the 1970's-1980's and reportedly accepted by Japanese. She speaks fluent Japanese and graduated from a well known all female Japanese university in Tokyo. She's happily married to her former Japanese PR agent with 2 teenage Japanese sons.

It's a shared East Asian cultural mentality between Japanese,Chinese and Koreans.A few Japan-phile foreigners fancy Japanese are just like them as NON-Asian people whatever that means.

Look up the word " clan or clannishness " in the English-Japanese dictionary.

Thanks for the clarification there Elizebeth san. Am I correct in taking the word 'you' to have Maciamo as the referent?

Let's see. . . Maciamo, isn't there something you need to be doing over in the Europe forum (rather than trying to squeeze the last molecule of life out of this original question on the Japanese word 'gaijin'?

it is called sarcasm...you can find a definition in wikipedia (your favorite source)

I am sorry you were so offended by it. Must be the way others feel when you refuse to even listen to reason, or other sides of arguments. You only want to believe what you have seen in your very limited view. Thank you for the warning though....at least you have learned something of how to treat people over the last year.

I will attempt not to hurt your feelings anymore

You will not attempt to hurt my feelings anymore, yet you say "Must be the way others feel when you refuse to even listen to reason" and "You only want to believe what you have seen in your very limited view."

Doesn't sound like you are making much effort.

So instead, what you end up with is a tribal acting society that generally almost never accepts outsiders.

Japanese would accept a few who can " arouse " their fancy, generally those have entertaining talents or great athlelic abilities.

Japanese would accept a few who can " arouse " their fancy, generally those have entertaining talents or great athlelic abilities.
and it depends on thier personality

I don't think personality carry any weight in this matter, unless a right-minded Japanese forumer ( other than you,of-course ) here can prove me wrong.

Thank you for the warning though....

Hummm...I wonder what this is about? I can't see anything that looks like a warning in the above posts? Hummmm....

Maciamo san, your projection, or accusation, if you will, in your post against CC1's post seems to have overlooked the fact that the sentence which you have focused on had come last. The action promised in that particular sentence is from that moment onward, therefore cannot be retroactively applied without further evidence for any intention on the part of the source.

I think it best to let that be, Maciamo . . . but warning? That kind of gives me flashbacks.☝

ricecake san and caster 51. . . I was just wondering if you two have carried some lingering emotional letdown over from some other thread? There really seems to be a very focused charge and rebuttal session going on between you two, all the while seemingly oblivious to the discussion going on around you two. (This is not to admonish, no, but simply to find out and state my speculations)

Mars Man-san,I know you're a voice of reasoning and I respect you for that.

I'll do my best to stay away from this particular poster from here on,otherwise I can easily get into another emotionally-charge episode of firing exchanges.Unlike him often soldiering his propagandized posts @ Jref,I take interest in fun topics other than WW 2 saga.

I understand not wanting to drag out old sagas, and greatly appreciate your effort in being cautious so as not to get too embroiled in them.

Thanks for your compliments...well, I'm not perfect, I know you know, but at least I try to maintain as fair a balance as possible. I look forward to further reading your posts on the board !! Talk to you later !! MM

Gaijin in Japanese simply means outside person ( people ),Japanese take the meaning to heart when dealing with foreign nationals in their exclusionary way.

CC1[/B], you misunderstand Maciamo's and my position. Looked at from the point of it being a slurツ、I think in some ways it is (when the more proper gaikokujin exists). Racist it's not, more like xenophobic.

I don't misunderstand your position. I contend that it is not racist. It seems as though you do too. That means that you agree that gaijiin is not a racist slur...am I right?

If I may, gentlemen, it might be good to let this one settle to the bottom. It may be dusted off by others later....but for now..

Thanks MM, CC1 a word is a word. Maybe I'll start using foreign outsider in English and see if it catches on!

WOW! I expected to read a short thread but this is LONG! My opinion goes with a lot of other's:
I think that the word itself is not bad, just the way you use it if you use it to make someone offended or accidently do, like a lot of people have stated. In English we use terms like, " black and white" and people who are polite know how and when to use them because, again, it's just how you use a word. If an African-American wants to be described as African-American and not black, I call them that. If a Japanese is trying to describe their American or whatever friend, they should be a able to. Japanese people shouldn't be blamed as a whole if you don't like the word gaijin or the way you are treated by some people there, because every country has people who won't welcome other people because they don't like people from other counries or whatever. I really don't think it's a HUGE deal or anything. I'm sure the word can be, and is, used without any offense to the person they are talking about. I hope that wasn't confusing.

Gai-jin means not Japanese and gaikogu-jin means foreigner. Gai-jin-san means, mr don't know your orgins. Gai-jin-san has nohing to do with racism... its very simple.
