Hi everyone,

I was wondering if anyone knows if a degree from an Open University is recognised in Japan? I have seen another post on here and it seems that it is but it wasn't 100%. This post was back in 2017, does anyone have any updates for 2024?

After leaving school I started working straight away and didn't get the chance to go to University, I now have 8 years of work experience which is not enough for a work visa for Japan. I want to start my degree with The Open University, however, I need to make sure this degree will be accepted to be able to get a work visa for Japan. I want to keep working to earn and save money, so online University is my preferred option rather than going to Uni in person

I would greatly appreciate information if anyone has any, and thank you in advance.

OU is out of UK, so I'm not sure, but why not choose Birmingham or one of the others that offer online degrees? Eg, Birmingham is one choice for people in japan who want an MA-TESOL that will be accepted by universities (the MA being a threshold criteria for that). I think those programs are not completely online, at least pre-covid there were summer gatherings here in japan where a cohort of students and faculty would come together for a couple weeks.

Not sure what is comparable in UK, but in the US (perhaps counterintuitively) regional accreditation is the gold standard, whereas national accreditation is almost unused--except by an online uni or two...

Hi from another Brit!

I've no idea, but there's a very friendly and active Facebook group called British Expats in Japan, and someone on there will almost certainly know.

Thank you so much guys!

I've actually enrolled in University and today was my first day, I'm still unsure as to if I want to commit to going to Uni in person ( I can withdraw within 2 weeks into the course without any fees ) but it seems like my safest option and I really do want to get my Bachelors Degree. This is why I was looking into The Open University as I can work and gain my degree as well as.

I will have a look at the Facebook group too!

Thank you so much for your help:)
