Every year in January and February, Yokoze Town in Chichibu, Saitama, holds a special event called "Ashigakubo Icicles" (あしがくぼの氷柱), in which water and ice form an artificial landscape of illuminated icicles. Sprinklers on the slopes of the valley create a giant field of icicles, which stand 30 metres tall and some 200 metres wide. The project was initiated by the residents of Yokoze and was first opened to the public in 2014.
