Travel Ice World 2023 in Mahora

An outdoor leisure facility in Morioka, Iwate, has created a twenty-meter-long ice tunnel to take advantage of its unofficial title as the coldest place on Honshu. The "Ice World 2023" event began on Jan. 21 at the Mahora Iwate facility in the city of Morioka's Yabukawa district, where it is said that temperatures are the lowest on Japan's main island. The mercury sometimes hits below minus 20 degrees Celsius during winter in the district, which is located in a high-altitude mountainous area in Morioka.

The main attraction is the huge ice cave, made by spraying water constantly since mid-December last year. Countless transparent icicles in the tunnel show the beauty of the extreme cold. Visitors can also enjoy wintry outdoor activities such as sledding and spending time in igloo-like "kamakura." According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the highest temperature in Yabukawa on Jan. 21 was minus 3.1 degrees C, recorded before dawn, and the temperature dropped to around minus 9 degrees C at night. Visitors were seen enjoying the ice cave, with one saying, "I'm overwhelmed by the beautiful icicles." The Ice World 2023 event will continue until Feb. 26. The venue is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Admission is 1,000 yen (about $8) for adults and 700 yen (approx. $5) for elementary school children.
