How useful is a VPN in Japan?

So here's the deal. I currently live in Shanghai, where one needs a VPN to get much of anything done as China's great golden shield blocks pretty much everything useful.

In six months I'm leaving Shanghai for Tokyo. Is there any practical reason for me to keep my VPN service in Japan? I don't care about using NetFlix, etc.

None that I know of, aside from country specific sites like Netflix and Hulu, nothing I've ever concerned myself with was blocked.

It depends on your purpose. If you just want to access other websites outside of Japan there are plenty of ways around it without using a VPN, but if you want to download movies and TV shows, I would seriously think about getting one. The punishment for getting caught includes a hefty fine and jail time. It all depends on how risk adverse you are.
