Tips and Advice for surviving the homesick phase here in japan.

Im pining so bad for home, i swear, the only thing stopping me from hiking over the japanese alps and then swimming to asia then walking across back to the english channel is that common sense and logic still prevail within my aching heart......for now.

So yeah, give ol' nuri some helpful hints, tips and advice to survive until i find the enlightenment of the zen like state of not missing home but not excited about everything japanese like a kid in a toy shop.

👍 😌

well i know how you feel.. i felt that way the first 6 months.. but after a year it dont really matter to me... i dont plan on going back for 3 more years unless they make me go for TDY or something

I found.......

keeping busy and having a lot of friends helped. Having a place to hang everyday helps. I found 1 bar I liked and went there almost everyday. I ended up working there. Made a zillion friends there and almost forgot about home.
Most inportant, spend a lot of time here at JREF and try the chat room out if you can catch us in there. We have 6 or 8 people every night (Maine time) in the chat room and have a ball yakking it up.
I used to get drunk and homesick and write to every girl I knew back home professing my love and telling them I wanted to marry them when I got home.Lucky most forgot or forgave me.

Keeping busy seems to help a little, im being a better house-cleaner then my girlfriends mum, mwahaha, and abadon all hope ye who mess up my spotless apartment, ive always had a knack for organizing.
Funny thing is in all my pining for home i downright forgot about my plants, so ive shot off an urgent message to my family back home to look after my babies :( (what?, i dont want a cat or dog, smelly animals...). :p

I agree with Frank... really it's the people that make you feel attached to some place, so, if you make many friends, that's the best. :p

I wish I could be of some help to you, dear friend, but I must confess that I have never been homesick a day in my adult life.

I have never felt homesick, either, but I have felt lonely before. I think maybe some of the same tactics I used then might be of some service.

Find clubs, like sports clubs, taiko clubs, international clubs, etc., and join them. Give yourself something new to look forward to. Start going to a gym. Exercise in and of itself is good for you, and you will doubtless make new friends. Travel, even if it's a short trip. A change of scenery might help.

Start thinking of Japan as your home. That psychological shift can make a huge difference. Just remember that you're in the minority population here, being non-Japanese and all.

Give yourself English break times. Maybe to watch a movie or listen to the BBC.

Good luck, and I hope this helps if only just a little!

Cheers for the hints and tips. 🙂

This is basically my first trip away from home without my family, and my first real trip abroad, and definately my first trip from home alone so, yeah. :S

Saying that the first month was easy, it didnt phase me at all.

I dont feel homesick much anymore, and happier about being here again, i dunno, i guess it was the post-flu downer. :p
