The historic Tairyū Sansō (對龍山荘) Garden, a government-recognized scenic beauty spot, has opened its doors to the public for the first time. Previously closed to the general public, the garden now invites visitors to explore its peaceful paths and admire the autumn foliage. Since 2010, furniture giant Nitori Holdings Co. has owned the garden, which was designed by renowned landscape architect Ogawa Jihei VII. The garden officially opened to the public this fall, allowing visitors to experience its timeless beauty.

Tairyu-Sanso

Tairyū Sansō garden stands on the former grounds of a Nanzen-ji sub-temple. Initially constructed in 1896 as a villa for Ijuin Kanetsune, a former Satsuma feudal retainer and a prominent figure in modern Japanese architecture, the garden underwent significant renovations in 1901-1905 under new ownership. Renowned landscape architect Ogawa Jihei VII redesigned the garden, incorporating a lawn, pond, stream, waterfall, and water mill while preserving the original design's essence. The garden's name, "Villa Facing Mt. Zuiryu," reflects its integration with the surrounding natural beauty, particularly the iconic Nanzen-ji Temple mountain. The design emphasizes aesthetic appeal and practicality, with spaces for tea ceremonies and garden parties.

Crafted by renowned carpenter Shimada Tokichi, the garden's buildings offer stunning landscape views. The Tairyu-dai, a room overlooking the pond, provides a panoramic vista of the garden and the distant Higashiyama mountains. The Juon-tei pavilion, believed to be an original structure, offers a serene and contemplative space. Tairyu-Sanso's diverse areas allow visitors to experience various scenic beauty, making it a treasured national cultural heritage site.
