It's because of the way the encyclopedias are placed on a shelf. The beginning of the A-M book (where Aardvark is) is up against the end of N-Z. So the bookworm only has to go through the front cover of A-M and the back cover of N-Z. [A-M][N-Z] <--- you see? Do you like Mary Shelley?
