Im new to this forum and new to the language, I am taking classes on it and am studying it at home. I have just mastered hiragana and am currently learning kana and some kanji. I have some questions.

How long did it take you to become fluent?

Is living in japan expensive, I am thinking about going to Tokyo for school.

What is the best way to learn japanese? I go to japanese class study, pratice writing and stroke order, study my japaniese dictionary a whole bunch at home then listen to pimsleurs cd's, and constantly learning usefull phrases.

This is a good place to learn and practice your new language.
I'm just learning myself, so I can't be much use to you, but go check out the "Learning Japanese" section and you will find godzillions of Q&A's.
You can look for answers from "Search" or by googling keyword+"jref.com." But you can always post your own question thread.

Hi welcome ! I'm new too and I'm learning japanese. Now I'm trying to work on my kanjis, hard !!
From my small experience I'd say that it depends what you like, songs are a good way to memorize new words for me bec you listen to them all the time and if you like a particular song you'll look up the vocab without even thinking it's work. Watching a lot of jap TV mangas works ... of will you end up talking like a yakuza or a shy young girl ?(depending on your tastes). it's good for words teachers never tell you about.
Learning lists of vocab tedious but works but LOOOOOOONG.
Finding an exchange partner is GOOD. I found a jap girl and we do 1h talk half French/half Japanese.

i dont know about the learning of Japanese here, but but its a really good place to talk everything Japan, so dont hesitate to talk about Japan.

As for you questions, do a search of the forums and i'm sure you'll find a lot of older topics still around that address the cost of living in Japan, ideal methods for learning the language, etc...
