Help id mark on lacquerware box please

Looks more Chinese than Japanese to me. The Japanese don't normally use this kind of ornate decoration/construction in their traditional arts. (But it could be made in Japan for foreign tourists near the end of the 19th century).

The mark doesn't seem like any identifiable kanji. For sure it would be a maker's mark (or a mark designating a school of makers), but I can't make it out.
