Help For Thesis

Hi, Im a mexican university student, I am working on my thesis about the interest of japanese people on the northern lights or aurora borealis, I have been twice in Fairbanks, Ak, US. in order to watch them, but I really need to know whay hundreds or thousands of japaneses go ever year to watch the lights ?????? I need an as possible complete answer. Thanks

I wasn't aware of this, but perhaps it's something similar to the tradition of hanami. You could probably draw parallels between the two.

It might help to know..............

if you can read/translate Japanese. Some of the websites with info on that topic maybe in Japanese(would that help?).

I am not interested, but it's true that many Japanese tend to go to Norway or Alaska to view aurora.

I assume ... one of the reasons will be that Japanese like something mysterious of nature. Unlike Westerners/Islam/Jewish, Japanese don't have specific religion, but we often feel mysteriousness of nature or something religious from Tree, Water Fall, Mountain, Stone, River, etc. The same as Native Indians or Aborigines or Polynesians, etc. Aurora may be one of them.

I'd say this is the best guess I could come up with as well on the topic. I know another Japanese friend who has this as one of her life GOALS. That and going to space... but that is another story.

Many Japanese are fascinated about the northern lights in Finland as well (and all of Scandinavia), and travel especially to Lapland to see those. Some seem to be disappointed to hear they can't see them during summer (well, it would be really rare), and not really in the southern parts of the country.
I can only say that the northern lights are absolutely amazing and beautiful, so it's no wonder people are fascinated by them. Japanese have a sense for beauty and serenity. Anime as well (Moomin cartoons as an example, which is a Finnish character) has shown 'Aurora' on screen. Now if I've seen something magical and beautiful on screen, but which doesn't exist in my own country, I'd be absolutely thrilled to see it "live"! (and have been, many times)

Despite the age of this thread, I felt compelled to answer.
If you are trying to answer this question for your thesis, do what you need to do: contact Japanese people with a proper survey.
