Contemporary artist, Tomokazu Matsuyama, in collaboration with East Japan Railway Company, launched a new iconic park space at the world's busiest transport hub. The community park space opened with its new monumental sculpture at JR Shinjuku Station in Tokyo.

The new community space designed by New York-based contemporary artist, Tomokazu Matsuyama, features an 8.5-metre tall sculpture made of stainless steel named "Hanao-San", as well as vividly painted installations throughout the space. Located next to JR Shinjuku Station's East Exit, which sees an average of 3.5 million passengers daily and is recognized as the world's busiest station by the Guinness Book of Records, this new community space has been open to the public since 20 July 2020.

The theme of the space is "Metro–Bewilder", a coined word consisting of three words, 'metro', 'wild', and 'bewilder'. By conceptualizing those keywords, Matsuyama created a new type of community space by combining two conflicting elements, 'metro' and 'wild'. The design represents the character of Shinjuku City being busy and crowded day and night, 'bewildering' people with its duality of elements and making it the new landmark of Tokyo.

Interesting. I don't recall using that exit. Typically I'd be using the east exit closest to Studio Alta or Minami or Nishi exits.
