Must see the original: Gojira !
Very different. The appearance of the monster as a mutation of the whale due to radioactivity is supposed to be related to the three US atomic bombs tested on people-- scars of WWII is evident in the original, whereas the Hollywood version connects it to the French detonation of its nuclear bomb on Bikini Island-- US role is all goodie--goodie, no, actually the US becomes the victim in the Hollywood version, and is basically, blaming the French :64: :146: :20: for the appearance of the Gojira monster.
As with all cases of regurgiated movies, the proverb says, "Nothing beats the original, which is always better than the sequel by a Godzillion times, always."
For Sci-Fi buffs, I highly recommend the original-- you will enjoy it if you can manage to leave your high expectations for Star Wars level F/X at home, and appreciate the plot and ideas. The SDF air force and army so bravely fought ! Oh, such passion ! Watch out for the last scene, what happens to Gojira...

edit: I really think this film has to be read from the victims' point of view, those who were in or near Hiroshima and Nagasaki; those who had even remotely experienced the A-bomb will shudder at the word *radiation.*
