ESP: Thank you for coming to the interview. First, please let us hear about what motivated you to start learning guitar.
Uruha: It's Sugizo. It was sometime between after Luna Sea's "Mother" first went on sale, and right before "Style" came out.
(me: between late 1994 - early 1996)
ESP: In what area did you receive influence?
Uruha: In the beginning, there was a strong image of scariness. Sugizo's attitude was very sharp at that time, wasn't it?
ESP: Which means, the first guitar you bought was…
Uruha: It was a GrassRoots Sugizo model, Horizon type. Then I tried copying Luna Sea's songs. My first band that was formed was a band for the school festival. The band members were friends from class and we all got together in a studio and practiced.
(me: *cough* he was in his first band with Reita, I think it was called Karasu and it was the band right before M'adie Kusse where Ruki joined as the drummer! XD)
ESP: Actually, on the ESP homepage, there is an interview I did with Sugizo. I had known before that he is a remarkable person, but after hearing the actual story from him I am even further convinced of his greatness.
Uruha: That… I read it all. (heh)
(me: FANBOY. XD)
ESP: For reals?! Thank you! But the contents of that interview were amazing huh?
Uruha: That was great studying material for me; I learned a lot from that!! The more I got to know him, the farther I felt the distance between him and my existence was.
(me: meaning he feels Sugizo's greatness is way above him and he is nothing compared to him. Uruha really respects and looks up to him huh? Just like the rest of Gazetachi to LUNA SEA XD)
ESP: So that is to say, Sugizo is what triggered Uruha's knowledge of ESP.
Uruha: Yes. In the PVs I saw his guitar with the ESP logo, and I thought "Wow, it's so cool". From there, there was a chance connection, and I got to meet someone from ESP through a person I knew at the studio. He told me "Next time I will take you there," and so he brought me to the ESP shop at Ocha-no-Mizu. The first thing I bought there was a blue ESP Horizon. I still use it even now. It was a 2-humbucker guitar. The boss of the ESP store gave me a huge discount. (heh)
(me: Ochanomizu is a suburb in Tokyo near Akihabara. Neither my sensei and I are knowledgeable with guitars so this part was hard... so technical Uruha... though I bet Aoi will be worse

ESP: So from GrassRoots, you skipped over Edwards and bought ESP directly eh? What was the feeling of trying out and playing the actual guitar?
(me: I think most people progress from GrassRoots model -> Edwards -> ESP. Uruha bypassed Edwards and went to ESP directly)
Uruha: From when I first used it, as I expected, it was different from GrassRoots; the FloydRose was stronger and more solid, and the tuning wouldn't go crazy. "Man, as I expected it was waaay different," were my thoughts at that time. (heh)
(Note: GrassRoots is not the original FloydRose, but the FloydRose licensed bridge is included. As expected, the original FloydRose is better.)
(me: more guitar terminology. I think a part of FloydRose, the "bridge" is used in GrassRoots models, but it's still not the whole, real thing. FloydRose must be a type of guitar or something.)
Uruha: So my relationship with ESP started after that. From GrassRoots, I got a second ESP Horizon. Until then I had always used GrassRoots in lives. I didn't know anything about the sound, as long as it was crooked, it's fine I thought. (heh)

Uruha: If you play a lot, you can hear the sound's flavor come out, and rather than buying a lot of guitars, I played this one a lot. It was with this Horizon when I started in the GazettE.

Uruha: A Spalted Maple Potbelly that I bought from the ESP store in Ochanomizu.
(Even though it was made out of rare materials, he used this one Spalted Maple as much as he wanted)
(me: to me, somehow this indulgence of Uruha is really like him to do XD. I'm glad music was more important to him than maintaining a guitar at "collector's mint condition" or something.♥)
ESP: So here Potbelly came out. And at a gallery, you were introduced to a blue Potbelly-
Uruha: Even though I really liked the Spalted Maple and mainly used that one, I started using the second blue one. It was mainly used for regular tuning only.
(me: Uruha's so into it, he cuts ESP's sentence off! and, if it isn't already obvious, he likes the spalted maple better)
ESP: So basically Uruha likes the LP shape? So as for the bridge, you used tunematic, like that.
Uruha: Actually in the beginning, I would have preferred an altered shape. Though I also liked Forest.
(me: don't know what LP is . And note, Uruha is saying that he would have liked a different or changed shape for his guitar. Forest is a popular angular looking model among rockers. Aoi himself had a custom black Forest GT, and apparently Uruha likes that model too. EDIT: it's a tunematic, thanks to toumeya)
ESP: Oh, is that so? But now, speck without an arm became the main, though.
Uruha: No, actually a long time ago the arm was basic. (heh)
(me: they said aamu in katakana, so I just guessed it as arm, and even then I don't know what it is.)

Uruha: How to say this, the visual appearance and the guitar perhaps didn't match. That was like a prejudice was there but when I first played the Potbelly, I felt anything is fine. I was attracted by the flexibility.
(me: now that solves a long time mystery of mine! I've always thought his simple guitar shape seemed to clash with his audacious outfits. So he's confirming it, saying that he'd had a prejudice against the Potbelly for it's shape but then he loved the sound so he stuck with it XD)
ESP: Did you feel any differences in sound between the blue and Spalted Potbelly?

I thought "Ah, this, it doesn't stand out. (heh) ...this, you don't have to practice as much eh?" That was what happened. (heh)
(me: HAHA. that reminds me of how L'arc's HYDE wanted to be guitarist instead of vocalist in the beginning because he thought girls liked guitarists bettter. I bet Reita was thinking the same thing when he said playing electric guitar looked cool XD. and, what an amazing inspiring reason to learn bass! IMPURE reasons INDEED.)

XDD I really loved Reita's interview XD He's sooo cute!! Impure reasons... LMAO... He tot no one would hear him if he played the bass wrongly XD I can't imagine him not knowing anything and could now play sooo awesomely... I guess there must be still some 'persistance' in him XD I always do some things and gave up halfway if it wouldn work well XP And yea, he did busted lots of money... I wonder where did he left all his guitars... Could he be playing them at his free time??
