I found this on Twitter today (posted by someone also a member of our TCC site). I doubt this is legal.

If this is remotely true, then ekaiwa is as evil as puppy mills.

Train wreck on top of a dumpster fire.
There are contradictions and differing views on the legality of calling your employees "contract workers" in order to take advantage of loopholes afforded by labor law, and the courts aren't stupid. Conversely, if Gaba wants to follow the strict letter of the law and classify their teachers as "independent contractors", you have to ask if the contract that imposes fines for sickness is legal and enforceable - particularly if that contract is coerced. It's just a complete sh*tshow of a company, trying to bamboozle its employees who Gaba knows can't afford legal representation.
Then this guy on reddit posting as a Gaba employee makes the comment about the general union being "communist". You wonder if these guys ever cracked a history book, or if they learn everything from twitter.
