A four-metre-long sinkhole appeared near a busy shopping district in central Fukuoka on Tuesday morning, prompting the closure of the area, although no injuries were reported. Police said they received an emergency call at around 9:50 a.m. regarding a collapsed section of sidewalk along a major city road. They explained that the hole spanned both the road and the pavement and measured about two metres in width and depth.

According to municipal authorities, construction work on a rainwater drainage system had been underway in the area since the previous month. They suggested that soil might have seeped into the pipes through small gaps, which likely caused the surface to give way. A 45-year-old employee at a nearby secondhand shop mentioned having seen the hole around 10 a.m., noting that it had roughly doubled in size within about half an hour.
