For those living in Japan-APPLIANCES!?!?!

Hello everyone, I'm new here and I'm so glad I have found this forum! I'm moving to Japan and am in the process of packing but have a few questions about appliances before i pack everything . I already know US wall-mount telephones work over there, and DVD players do not. I also know that the voltage is lower in Japan than here.

1. Do you absolutely need an adaptor(is that the right thing?), or can I just plug my appliances in and let them run on the low voltage and have them still work? I did this with my curling iron the last time I visited and worked okay... I'm talking mostly about lamps, my CD player, answering machine, air cleaner, my cordless phones...

2. Has anyone taken an American lamp and fit a Japanese light bulb in it?

I think it might be some sort of transformer. You might not want to risk it since appliance was designed to opearte on a higher voltage anyway.

No, you don't need an adaptor. There's other threads on this very topic. Search a bit and you'll find more than enough info.

If you have a region free DVD player, it'll work.
