Finally a "New" Yokozuna (It's Official)

Undefeated Hakuho dominates Asashoryu
Hakuho, who is all but certain to be promoted to grand champion, wrapped up his second straight Emperor's Cup on Saturday, and Sunday's win over sumo's lone grand champion will add to his resume for promotion.

Congratulations to Hakuho, finally there will be another Yokozuna to stand next to Asashoryu.
4 of the last 6 Yokozuna have been foreign born wrestlers, 2 American's, Akebono and Mushashimaru and now with the expected promotion of Hakuho, 2 from Mongolia.
Congratulations to him on his rise to the rank of Yokozuna.

Hakuhou was promoted to Oseki a year ago, and given the pace of his rise through the ranks, it just might be that he becomes the East Yokozuka soon.

Personally, for sentimental reasons, I wish that a Japanese wrestler could be the next Yokozuna, but apparently, they just currently aren't quite as talented as some of the non-Japanese wrestlers.
 
heheheheh let's hope Takamisakari will be the next Yokozuna!!

man how i love sumo-wrestling!! but indeed there are few japanese sumo-wrestlers in the makuuchi division

by the way did anybody know something of a wrestler called Terao?? he used to be some years(6-8 years ago) a very good wrestler i wish i knew what happened to him
 
I do believe he will be promoted to Yokozuna and it will be nice to finally have a new Yokozuna, foreign or not.

During my visit to Japan the last two weeks I had the opportunity to see the 9th day of the Sumo Tournament on May 21st, the day before Asashoryo lost his first bout. This time I bought the box seats on the bottom and I must say I will never do that again as they are too damn small to fit even four average Japanese people. Talk about leg cramps! However, it was nice to sit that close for the first time (we were in the ninth row) and it was alot of fun.

Also, it also looks like we have another up and coming foreign wrestler in 22 year old Juyro, Baruto, who finished 14-1 (see attached photo)

Congrats to the potential new fella!!

On the question of why the Japanese are slipping down the ranks in Sumo, I do wonder if the Japanese wrestlers are not a little too comfortable in their little niche; their privileged little pocket of society; that the foreign-born wrestlers aren't more motivated, more desperate to succeed, and far less encumbered by the pitfalls that the Japanese lads encounter.

 
I was there on Sunday for the final round. It's even more exciting to watch in person! there were some truly amazing bouts. The final round between Asashouryuu and Hakuho was especially electrified, and when he won, the crowd went wild, throwing their zabutons everywhere like mortarboards in a graduation ceremony. Definately a memorable experience, I recommend it to anyone who has a chance.
 
It's about time someone stepped up these past few years. This should make the sport much more interesting in the comng year. I'm looking forward to it.
