I still say check out the other branches of service !

Unless you are one tough cookie, pick a branch where life is easy. Being a Marine is difficult in just about every area you can think of. Worst duty, worst equipment; you name it and they have it bad. If you survive it all, you can be proud for the rest of your life though. Best of luck in whatever you do and try to check in here to let us know how you are doing.

if i may hyper, why the marines? and what job do you want?

as for enlisting day, meps will take all day reguardless of what anyone tells you, in my case an extra day. also, whatever anyone promises you, get in writing on your contract before you sign. dont let them tell you they add it later etc. you have to be adamant about what you want.

i ship out for the navy in august

I beg to differ about the sexist treatment...from what I've seen, the females are just as tough (if not tougher) than the males. I served for 8 years and I'm Army now ( I regret it too) but I get to see Marines on a daily basis, and I talk to them about life in the Corps compared to what it used to be.

And uh, Uncle Frank, the Marines have better equipment than the Army does...definitely has better weapons. We have total crap when it comes to equipment, and this new ACU uniform sucks. And don't forget about the Army is now doing 15-month tours in Iraq, while the Corps is sticking with 7-month tours.

And hyper, you can request Okinawa as your first duty station, you may even be able to get it guaranteed in your contract. But regardless of where you go, volunteer for deployments. You'll get promoted easier.

Why on Earth would a girl want to join the Marines? Just curious.

I never had the "pleasure" of being in the military as Nixon ended the draft when I was 19 and I had a high lottery number anyway.

Good advice on the camera. My dad was a MP in the Army during the Korean War and took a bunch of photos. One I have is of him standing in front of the Godaido Temple in Matsushima, Japan in 1951. I found the spot last year and had a nice Japanese fellow take one of me there. I had a crowd of Japanese tour boat crewmen around me looking at my dad's photo in awe.

considering the things that i have been through in my life, i have some mental strength. i know that will not prepare me enough for the experience, but i am fully committed to enlisting in the Marine Corps for exactly that purpose. I want a challenge. This is the only thing that I want to do and have wanted to do since I was in the first grade. I am ending my junior year in high school. I appreciate all of the forewarnings and everything but nothing, and I mean NOTHING will change my mind about enlisting in to Marines.

He he...my sister joined the Marines a few years ago. She's the one I DON"T pick on 😌 . She now runs the Chesapeake, Virginia, Gold's Gym. People generally don't mess with her...:box:

You know, Jeisan..people ask me this all of the time. I have never really had a good answer because it's what I feel that makes me want to go into the Marines. Maybe it's my calling? lol. My life has not been the easiest but yet I know that it has not been the hardest. I have been called worthless and I have been told that I can't do anything right...over and over again for my entire life. Doing this, I feel, will prove to me that I am worth something. I know that I am a strong person; I don't need anyone to tell me that. But there are still scars that need to be healed and I want a challenge to do so. The Marines, I have heard and read, is the hardest (of course besides special forces i.e. Navy S.E.A.L.S, Army Rangers, Delta, etc) and proving to myself that I am even strong enough to do this...I feel that I will have a sense of self accomplishment. I know other people want to cure diseases or help children in other countries and of course I'd like to also but this is my dream. This is my calling.

Thank you for the advice about the contract. I have heard that from a few people and since my father is very good with contracts, I am hoping that he will help me with doing that.

Haha, you tell it, man! :D Thank you very much for that. All of this information is so helpful! I wasn't aware that I could get that in my contract...stationed in Okinowa. The recruiter told me that I have a top 3 choice and where ever they need me, based on my MOS, they'll do their best to put me there. And the advice on promotion: VERY HELPFUL!!!! Thank you so much! 8 years in the Marines? Wow. You guys are all so helpful. (And to Uncle Frank:...I forgot to say thank you for wishing me the best in whatever branch I go in.)

Actually, I would think that a girl would enlist in a more "female-friendly" branch such as the Air Force or Navy. I know a girl from college who joined the Air Force and made a career of it.

I have no doubts that you will make it though boot camp.
 
hey Hyper...they are sending you to Parris Island, right? Because that's where REAL Marines are made...:devilish:

Back in the day, all female recruits went to PI...don't know if that changed.









And make sure you post a pic of your graduation!!!

i more was asking what do you want to do in the marines; sniper, infantry or whatever.

oh my bad, jeisan. i would love to be a sniper. i hunt so i have experience with shooting, etc. but i think i will be military police because women are not allowed in infantry, etc. (though thats what i want to do) but id like to go to college, become and officer, then a fighter pilot.

Actually, unless I'm mistaken, if you shoot Expert on the rifle range consecutively, you'll at least have the opportunity to get on the Marine Corps Competition Shooting Team. I believe that is open to all Marines, but I could be misinformed. Never wrong, just misinformed. :-) (remember that when you get to boot camp...you're never wrong, just misinformed!)
 
oh okay, wow, well now i know im going to try to do very well in the rifle range (not that i wouldnt try anyways) 😌 thank you for that. yes, just misinformed. lol.
