Thanks so much guys ! Especially to Buntaro since I know it isn't really considered appropriate to start these post-count threads yourself after reaching the 1,000 mark.

There may be larger and more active language sites on other forums but the cooperation and courtesy extended by everyone here is unsurpassed in my experience.

Although my Japanese is isn't that natural at all yet (I've only been at it five years), it is improving substantially week by week and I love working at it so...helping so many others in the process is just a fabulous side benefit.

Elizabeth's part as a long term helper here is a terriffic asset to the Forum. Her ability to stay out of the day to day petty arguments and check in each & every day to help others deserves recognition and appreciation. Thanks epigene! Yeah, me too. What I'd really like to be able to arrange an extended stay in Japan for study, travel, making new friends and of course being closer to my boyfriend -- only he is wary of me quitting my job for that right now, which pays very nicely for all this travel, so we're sort of at an impasse. My goal is that as my fluency improves more people will help make the decision for me by starting to recommend that as an option.

I'm continually impressed at the passion and drive with which Elizabeth both pursues her own study of the language and strives to help others who have not yet made it to her level.

I also admire her for not being self-conscious about posting in Japanese -- this is an important part of the learning process, and a trait that I wish I could develop for myself.

Of course I'm aware most of what I wrote is probably very kudoi and strained. Since I'm only up to the point of getting most of my practice from reading Japanese newspapers and listening to news broadcasts. The naturalness aspect will hopefully come in due time with the proper exposure -- although the kind of friends I seem to attract still prefer a more formal style.

Wow you've only been studying for 5 years? That is amazingly short. I guess it all depends on how hard you study. Maybe you can tell me what you study/how long each day and maybe that will help me and I can gleam from your knowledge of great japanese.

I started with the "Japanese For Busy People" series combined with tutors, Japanese children's books, talking with friends -- basically the whole gamet of approaches. To repeat, which texts have you already started working through on your own ? The chatroom experience may have been a good reality check on how you're going to need to get to where you want to be. A place I've never even dared approach at my level....

Because I wasn't making a translation. These were two different sentences.
And please stop using the word 'fluency' in describing my abilities. It's intermediate and I can understand more than I can produce but I still have
a very long way to go. And after passing JLPT 2 next year I may give it all up out of sheer sweat and nervous exhaustion. (j/k)

How many JLPT levels are there? Elizabeth, I do not have any japanese texts. They are so expensive. I do have a japanese dictionary, however. I want to take a class but no community colleges offer them

I think you're going the right way. A lot of people (esp. young people) who encounter Japanese used in anime, movies, etc., find the language different from what is taught in textbooks and throw away the standard form, placing priority on communication with people in their own generation. That's understandable, but it makes things tremendously difficult when it's time for them to use polite Japanese as adults, especially when talking in formal and business situations.

Actually, it's easier to learn colloquial Japanese AFTER you master the polite standard form of Japanese than vice versa.

It may be "kudoi" or strained at times, but I do admire and respect the approach you are taking.

No, it's saying "Naruhodo" is like saying "Sou nan da" or
"Isn't that right...yes, of course"
