Man oh man! What has ever happened to respecting and taking care of ancient treasures like the Great Wall?!?!? I can't understand the forum at all, but by looking at the pictures I can get the gist of what's going on. When I saw the pic of the guy peeing on Great Wall I couldn't believe my eyes! I bet he's proud of it to, "Hey guys! I took a pee on the great wall!" (friends "AWEEEEEEESOME!". It really is a shame that our world's ancient treasures are being lost to people who just don't give a d@mn.

On the other hand, I'm sure that party would have made a great story in the future, "I partied on the FREAKING Ultimate Wa - er...that's not it.......GREAT Wall of .... oh shoot, where was I again?!?" Hahahahahahaha.

first of all, doing drugs, having sex like that, and peeing on the place, is wrong
second, don't the chinese people have the respect for their country at all? and then the foreigners come into the country and doing this? if you don't have the respect for our country, get out.

There is no use talking about right or wrong with these people. If you are on drugs, drugs is right. I read somewhere in the same forum, the writer complains what the hell the security was doing there. Chinese ﾂ工ﾋ?? is notoriously fierce, hell someone must have bought them to shut up. Nobody beat the great Renminbi. Mmmh, there is no need to save ﾃ､ﾃ昶?板｢窶卍ｷﾂ湘ｩ, it's not mine, it's not yours, it might be a symbol of Chinese past grandeur of feudalism and self glofication. But it serves no purpose these days than just a tourist spot. Perhaps tt helps gear up China's economy, bring more money to China. I guess they better chisel down the whole wall, and sell it at seven eleven as souvenirs, or just tell everyone it has elixir curing power. Make big bucks. After all it is all about margins in China, who really cares about Great Wall. The wall that has isolated China from western modernization, and fooled the eyes of the common over the centuries. The wall that has blocked outside influence to China is useless today, for planes flies above and internet reaches even the remotest area in china.

Well, peeing goes a bit far, but the rest of it? Do you think the soldiers originally manning the wall didn't party there? They surely drank a lot of alcohol. & having sex with some sutler was probably quite common as well. Hell, they probably even peed there (I doubt that all of them at all times used some sort of lavatory).

Good points all, but I have this feeling that anything historic should be preserved to some level, and this just seems like desecration to me. It's not so much that I love that Great Wall, it's more along the lines of leaving something so historically pertinent alone. The partying and peeing on the wall to me is tantamount to partying and peeing in the Great Pyramids at Giza, which is something that I think most people would find appalling (at least I know I would).

I can't argue that such things did not occur during the use of the wall as a defense barrier. I'm sure throughout Chinese history the various soldiers who manned the wall didn't give much of a thought to their predecessors, either. The difference to me is that the wall is no longer used in the capacity that it was initially intended for, and as such has become a historic monument. I wouldn't want someone peeing on the Washington Monument, the Statue of Liberty, the Eiffel Tower, Buckingham Palace, Himeji Castle , or The Golden Temple either. The point to me is that once something becomes a historic site (I suppose I can define that as one which has served a purpose in the past, but doesn't anymore, but that's probably up for debate) it should be treated with more respect than some building that only serves a certain purpose in the present, without any historical significance. Still, I think the key here is historical significance, and not so much what service the structure, building, site, etc. serves at present.

Aside from what I think, I'd like to know what thoughts and feelings you have about this, bossel. Do you think it's a desecration, or just another series of events in the life of the Great wall (and by "events" I mean insignificant and ordinary events)?

I can generally agree with what you say. I wouldn't call it desecration, though. As someone who's interested in history very much, I tend to dislike the behaviour shown in these pictures. That does not mean that I would want to prohibit it. Except for peeing, that is, since this might damage the building's substance (I hate peeing in public places, anyway, for hygienic reasons).

I would also make a differentiation regarding the age of the building. If it's a rather recent reconstruction, I'd say "So what?", the older & the more original, the more consideration I'd expect.

I think when you're drunk and you need to pee you don't mind where you pee...in this case it's on the great wall.I feel ashamed in those foreigners place, as they obvious show no respect towards a famous historical monument!And I don't think Chinese people mind either to do such things...And indeed, money is the key in China, even the police can be bought...it's a shame ! I've seen so many guards around the big wall, and I'm sure any sane person would not like a raveparty being held at the Great Wall !One thing I learned is that Chinese people do just about anything for money
