Do you have to follow a dress code at work? How strict is it?

My husband works in a call centre and just got told off for wearing jeans. Not denim jeans, just black heavy cotton trousers. He sits behind a desk doing paperwork all day, so does it really matter what he wears?

I understand the point of uniforms, so that customers can recognise a staff member easily. I don't see the point in uniforms or dress codes if you are not customer facing.

I think I work better if I'm dressed comfortably, so there's an argument that my dressing casually improves the standard of my work.

What do you think? Should people dress smartly for work?

For a second I thought this was going to be about grade school uniforms lol

When I worked i dressed rather casual, but I was a teacher. However, you could kind of make an example here. Some teachers would dress very formal to seem professional and serious. I chose the more casual approach, but I still kept myself dressing decent.

I would say even in a casual environment how you choose to dress reflects how you wish to present yourself to those around you. I would suspect this is the idea behind formal dress codes. However, if it is sweltering hot outside, or there simply isn't a strong need for such a dress code, I'd hope they question the importance of doing so.

I think we have to follow a dress code at work for some seasons like :
1- Poeple will recognize you according to your dress( oh this is him ).
2- You chose that Job so you must accept the terms.
3- it's a civilization aspect.

I really want to see people here following dress codes.

I'd agree with that, which is a good enough reason for viewing it as unimportant. Your attitude to work should be about a lot more than caring about what people think of how you look. So long as you aren't unnecessarily disrespectful in your dress I don't think it matters at all.

I think so too. The usual argument that dressing smartly shows that you take your job seriously just doesn't seem to be borne out in practice.

I wear jeans, t-shirts and boots to work, but I'm good at my job and very highly thought of here. There are others who dress in business suits but are well-known idiots.

I agree. When our office moved to the commercial department of the university there was some talk of our wearing uniforms. Totally unnecessary since we sit in an isolated office and do almost all our work by phone and email.

I agree with you to a point. There's a good reason why shop workers wear uniforms: so they can be easily recognised by customers. I don't have a problem with that. When I say dress codes are stupid, I don't mean that people should be allowed to go to the office in a bikini. But I'm against arbitrary rules, such as a ban on jeans. They're just trousers!

1: "Why look! It's Bill from accounting! I know his red cape and nazi helmet anywhere so it must be him!" Why worry about names and those overrated things called faces when you have a dress code... which everyone else generally follows.

Although, I agree on the existence of dress codes for certain places (keep in mind some are for safety too, but I doubt you're speaking of that issue)

Not really, but as a driver my clothing has to be practical. I can't really wear trainers as some companies won't even let you on site unless you have proper safety boots.

I have to agree with Hezam. I'd rather work in jeans myself, but there are certain settings that require a business suit.

People judge us by appearance. We can rail against the nonsense of that, but human nature is what it is. Not wearing a business suit when such is expected can cost one customers, clients, credibility. Furthermore, you'd be drawing needless attention and showing disrespect to others.

I realize this is not true for some fields. But for others, it is.

What about other settings? How would you dress for a wedding, for example?

Weddings are one occasion where I like to see a traditional dress code. It's nice for the bride and groom if the photos they will keep show everyone dressed nicely.

I would like to say that, it is very necessary and looks professional, It is very good if we have some formal wear in office and it really effect your overall personality. sometimes it happen that people don't have dressing sense and they wear anything which is not suitable. It is better to have the perfect dress code. It make us realized that we are working in corporate company. I love wearing formals.

We don't usually have those dressing codes:?,everyone is free to wear whatever he wants,but when I see those school uniforms and all the people wearing the same uniform I feel the sense of group work.
I think those uniforms are designed to be comfortable for every person,either in school or in any other place.
So why shouldn't we stick to those rules at work then in daily life we are free,so we can take it easy.
I'm sure you're gonna say that because we don't have those rules we are talking so,I mean those who do not have those codes in general,but believe me I like when I see Japanese in such uniforms,they look a very respectful nation.May be if I were in your situation I would complain the way you do who knows!

Yes...I'm afraid that I am under a certain dress code here, even as lax as a university setting is, I do have to wear, well, shall we say, clothes?

Pretty stict I do reason. (of course I haven't tried not wearing any clothes yet...even if I were in some deep study of the Amazon peoples....

BUT...otherwise (hee, hee, hee....) I feel dress codes are good, for certain things, up to a certain point, but...and this is a BIG BUT, that bar, or cut-off point of allowance, is usually TOO high in too many settings, in my concerned opinion. (especially here on the Japanese isles)

I both feel and reason, that your husband should not have had anything said to him in any negative way, at all . . . unless it could have been easily demonstrated that his wear had negatively affected his work output (to a neutral third party). Give him my best wishes, and 'give 'em hell' emotional backing !!!

Meh, it rears its head every few weeks, but they've yet to enforce it. Not to worry, he's armed himself with the Wikipedia article on denim and is ready to prove that he's not wearing jeans because the weft does not pass under two or more warp threads, and there is thus no diagonal ribbing on the underside of the cloth

Another thing about dress codes: they are a lot stricter for men. "Smart" dress means at the very least a shirt and trousers for men, but the definition for women is a lot looser. I have an idea of why that is but would like to hear what others think.

For me it makes no difference, the only reason for me that you would wear a uniform is so that customers know you work there and can ask you for advice or whatever, then again you could just wear like a tag or something. As long as you do your job properly I don't care if you want to come in wearing a barney suit (might not be appropriate for retail shops though =P), people don't need that kind of added pressure, wearing what you want would make you feel comfortable and therefore would benefit your work.
