Difference between どの and どんな

I always thought どの meant "which" (out of a group), and どんな meant "what type" or "what kind". But in class the other day there was some question which asked どんな something something, and the answer was of a specific object, not a specific type (sorry I can't remember the exact question and answer).

So what exactly is the difference between どの and どんな?

「どの」だと、選択を与えて選んでもらう場合ですね。

たとえば「ブラン・フレーク、 レーズンブラン、 コーンフレークスのなかで、どのシリアルが一番好きですか」ですね 。

一般的に聞くなら「どんな（種類の）シリアルが一番好 きですか」ですね。

でも、この場合は、どちらの聞き方をしても、多分何か シリアルの名前が返ってくるでしょうね。

そうですね。だから、私はまだ分かりません

選択を与えないで「どのシリアルが一番好きですか」と 聞いたら、変ですか。

それは聞いたことがないですが、あまり変じゃないかな 。。。

はっきり名前を挙げて聞きたい場合は、これでいいかも しれないけど。。。

実は、選択がないけど、「どの」を使ってもいいです。 基本的に、どのは、What, which で、どんなはWhat kind でですね。

シリアルの文ですが、「どんな」の質問をしても、はっ きりシリアルの名前がかえってくるだろうと

状況にもよるけれど、やわらかくいうなら「「一番好き なシリアルはなんですか」ともいえますね。

普通は、このような質問になりますね。
いきなり、「どのXXXが好き？」の質問はあまりしないあｩもしれませんね。

どのシリアル と。。。はなんですか？の違いは、What cereal is your favorite, what is your favorite cereal の違いに似ているんですね。

確かに「どの」を使う場合には具体的な選択肢があるようですね。「ＯＯ、ＯＯ、ＯＯの中、どれがいい？」という質問に使いますね。

「どんな」と聞くなら、あいまいでも具体的でも返事できるみたいです。What kind of cereal do you like? って聞かれると、cornflakesと答えてもあまり分かりにくくないでしょうか。

Ｂｕｃｋｏさんのおっしゃる問題がどんなものか、具体 的には分かりません。でも、違う使い方を考えて見まし た。

「どんな」ー＞ｗｈｅｎ：
どんな時に使うのでしょうか？
When do you use it?

「どんな」の後に使われる名詞によって、答えがｓｐｅ ｃｉｆｉｃかｇｅｎｅｒａｌになると思います。

そうですね。分かりやすい答ですよ。
何を聞きたいのかによって聞き方も変わってきますね。
はっきりと具体的な答を聞きたいのなら、「どのシリア ル。。。」と聞くし、ただ、漠然と答えてもいいのなら 、「どんなシリアル」と聞くのが自然でしょうね。
選択が与えられなくても、どのの質問を使ってもいい場 合が沢山ありますね。

そしてそういうみたいな意味で使われると、What time じゃなくて、When/In what context do you use it ということになりますね。

Thanks for the replies everyone. Clears it up pretty much. Althought the fact that どんな doesn't really request a clear, specific answer still kind of keeps in confusing. But I think I get it now.

I hate to revive this too much if it throws everything into a stew again....but anyway here goes. Maybe shorter is truly better this time.

No one can answer with donna why that happened in your class without knowing the particular example. All we can offer is that obviously some categories of things are easier to break into type than others. If I asked "What kind of celebrity would you like to be?" That's easy. Athlete, singer, actor....If I asked "What kind of cereal you like best?" (Sorry to beat this one to death :/) -- it is not so easy. I mean you could answer something like "Bran" or "Hot" or "Sugar free" but most people have specific preferences and most of the time you'll get a more defined response than in the first example.

Or, it could be something like "donna fuu ni" which epigene suggested...(What are the operating instructions for this machine or appliance)....There a million possibilities. The main problem is that you aren't necessarily "requesting" a vague answer with donna as much as that is how certain questions are going to be most reasonably answered.
