By UN vote, Palestine is now a sovereign nation. I don't support my country's vote against this measure.

I support sovereignty, and peace, for both Israel and Palestine. Israel should remove its illegal settlements in exchange for security guaranties from the UN and its neighbors.

It's been long overdue. It's interesting to see who are the naysayers: as expected Israel, the United States, Canada, but also the Czech Republic, Panama, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, and Palau. I wonder what they can expect in return for their favour.

I'm brand new here, so I refrained from posting in the "Why do you support Israel" thread. I do support Israel (with some limitations and caveats), but if I post something lengthy there, it might not have much weight coming from someone with only one post to his name. Just the same, I want to thank you, RolandTheHeadless, for being the voice of reason in that thread. I do appreciate it.

I'm not sure how I feel about the UN vote on Palestine. I mostly have disdain for the UN, but on the other hand, I strongly feel the Palestinians should have their own state. Of course, giving them their own state doesn't count for much unless that state has an economy. Citizens need to be able to travel freely in and out of Palestine. Palestinians need education, jobs, infrastructure. And of course, for that to happen they need peace.

You've all heard it before, but in order for the above to happen, they need to stop those rockets.

They HAVE stopped those rockets. They get little in return. So the rockets start again.

You cannot keep a people captive and expect them not to fight for their freedom. Israel has warships patrolling all water routes to and from Gaza, and the Gazans are not allowed to fish far enough away from the coast to catch nearly enough. Israel destroyed Gaza's civilian airport, and no airplane is allowed to enter or exit Gaza and there are Israeli warplanes flying over Gaza every single day to make sure. Israel has their border with Gaza on lock down, which is fine. But Israel also has a say in what happens with the Egypt/Gaza border, and that is NOT okay. The Gazans are literally captives.

Plus the Israelis have complete control over imports and exports and at times even things like fresh meat, potato chips, chocolate and coffee have been deemed contraband by Israel. How could anyone just sit and take being treated low as cattle?

I am afraid the U.N. vote won't make much difference in Gaza.

It will mean a lot more for West Bank though, although it won't mean instant independence for them either.

Even so, no country has more resolutions decrying its behavior than Israel. They won't obey the U.N.

And let us remember that Palestinian independence was first declared in 1988, long before Hamas had power and long before rockets were ever fired into Israel and occupied areas outside of Gaza and West Bank. But the Israel government keeps throwing away every chance it gets at peace, just like it threw away the Palestinian independence bid in 1988 which led to a divided Palestine, Hamas rule in Gaza, and rocket attacks on Israeli citizens.

Israel does not want peace first. Israel wants land first. Israel only wants peace totally on her terms, which are unacceptable terms to anyone. So there is no peace.

Thanks guys, It's nice to see people's reaction.
Although it doesn't change anything on the ground.

I usually don't respond to you on this topic, Zorro. Certainly not in other forums. We may have to have an early agreement to disagree, although I'll be happy to give you the last word on this contentious issue.

I will say that when Arafat made that declaration of independence in 1988 to which you referred, the PLO did not have control over any territory. None. Furthermore, it claimed all of Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine, although in reality that was completely under the control of the Israelis. As Hezam wrote above, the new UN vote doesn't change anything on the ground, and this was also the case in 1988. In fact, you cannot even find the date 1988 on the wikipedia page of the History of Palestine.

No grievance is an acceptable or appropriate excuse for firing rockets randomly at civilian populations. Certainly "not getting what they want" is not even remotely acceptable as justification.

One thing you do have right is that Israel will not obey the UN.

If we go back another 40 years before 1988, then we find something significant: Resolution 181.
The Jews accepted the Resolution; Arabs unanimously rejected it. It passed by a vote of 33-13 with 10 abstentions. Had the Arab world voted for the plan, a Palestinian state would be as old as Israel is today, and within larger borders than the 1949 Armistice lines that the Palestinian President now claims for his new, notional, "state."

I believe that No American person will agree on dividing the United states to 75% for Russia and 25 for Americans but with full Russian control on everything including the DC !
No British or any other nation would agree on dividing their own Land and giving even small part of it to a collection of groups of people from different places because of a story from 4000 years ago !

Would you agree on dividing your nation like that ?

:)

That's pretty much a non-sequitor. Russia has no claim on America. The Israel situation is unique one, and hard to make parallels with.
I have seen and read interviews with Israelis, but I can't speak for them. But it's hard to think that any of them who are moral think the situation with Palestine is morally justified (particularly sad considering it's a country based on religion).
As for Palestine, people there target civilians, which is reprehensible. But if I was there, and it was my family and ancestors who had been stepped on and lived in waste, I wonder if I would abandon Western suburban morality too.
Your post was pretty vague. I honestly don't know what side you were arguing for. :)

You really can't go after Palestine for targeting civilians with out pointing the finger at Israel also. Both sides of this conflict have spilled innocent blood. Both sides through out this conflict have targeted civilians. There really isn't a real good guy here. Both sides have done so pretty ugly things.

Hezam,

You're right in that I would not want to divide my country (the United States) like that.

If I could turn back time, I would like to see Jews relocated to someplace outside of the middle east. Where, I'm not sure. But, since Israel is largely a secular nation, I would give up Jerusalem and the holy sites to Islam. (Yes, I know, it's not up to me; it's just my opinion). I have no sympathy for the religious hardliners in Israel, and I am very much against the settlements. The settlements are probably my single biggest criticism of Israel.

At the same time, I do feel that the surrounding Arab nations are not willing to deal with the reality that Israel is here to stay (politically). I think these nations could help solve the Palestinian problem, but if they did, it would be harder to find fault with Israel. It is almost as if Palestine is an excuse to get rid of Israel once and for all. And, although no one can know for sure, I feel that one day Israel will cease to exist, unfortunately. Not because of a political process, but simply as a result of its violent destruction.

I will say that when Arafat made that declaration of independence in 1988 to which you referred, the PLO did not have control over any territory.

That is a disgusting comment frankly. The PLO had the will of the PEOPLE. What is military control of land compared to the will of the people living on it?

You could have said the same of the American Founding Fathers and the signing of the Declaration of Independence frankly.

No grievance is an acceptable or appropriate excuse for firing rockets randomly at civilian populations.

I am not quite sure how you know the rockets are not being randomly fired at IDF bases. When dealing with rockets that have no real guidance systems, it seems that semantics rule the day. Tell you what, just as soon as someone sells them the technology, we might be able to convince them to target military targets so that everyone can agree that their methods are legit. Yeah, right.

I say "maybe" because it might be difficult to convince a people uneducated by force that civilian casualties on the other side should be avoided at the same time as the other side pours white phosphorous on your civilians. Seems a tall order.

It never ceases to amaze me how for every Israeli killed and injured, 100 Palestinian civilians get killed. But the Pals are the bad guys! Sometimes I think I must be living in a mirror universe the way people interpret such facts precisely backward!

Isn't it the Israelis with all the high tech precision gear, many gifts from the U.S. and others, that are the ones we would expect to be able to avoid civilian casualties? But no, its the guys that make most of their weapons out of tin cans (which they are not allowed to have) who get the grief!

Yes, it may be wise to agree to disagree, not so much to avoid the discussion, but to make sure there are no hard feelings, knowing what the outcome will be before it comes.

Furthermore, it claimed all of Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine, although in reality that was completely under the control of the Israelis.

Yes, that was a bit of a problem. But from what I remember, there are fairly clear Jewish/Israeli and Palestinian/Arab sections of Jerusalem but talks of division did not go far and as I remember, it was the Israelis who threw their arms in the air first. They would not negotiate Jerusalem at all.

Yes, it may be wise to agree to disagree, not so much to avoid the discussion, but to make sure there are no hard feelings, knowing what the outcome will be before it comes.

No hard feelings so far.

The declaration of independence in the English colonies that would become part of the U.S. is a poor analogy, here. There is no parallel.

Zorro there *are* attacks on IDF bases, and in my opinion (FWIW) they are fully legitimate targets. There are also rockets that reach schools and hospitals. Why? Because of a lack of accuracy? Because they are fired *everywhere*. In all directions. Furthermore, they are fired from within Arab schools and mosques, making it harder to avoid civilian casualties on the Palestinian side when the Israelis strike back. Human shields, in other words.

It never ceases to amaze me how for every Israeli killed and injured, 100 Palestinian civilians get killed. But the Pals are the bad guys!
Once again, I think you are confusing military might with wrong and right. No one disputes that Israel has a technological advantage. Having this advantage does not make them morally inferior (or superior) to the Palestinians. Military technology is mutually exclusive from morality and from decisions made. You can point to civilian casualties and they are regrettable. Even the Israelis acknowledge this. You can argue that they aren't showing enough restraint, but in my opinion you'd be wrong. If the Israelis desired civilian casualties, you'd see them in the tens or hundreds of thousands.

Meanwhile, you have neglected to criticize Iran, a somewhat sophisticated nation in terms of miltary tech, which gives Fajr-5 missiles to the Pals and watches safely from the sidelines, suffering zero casualties.

The declaration of independence in the English colonies that would become part of the U.S. is a poor analogy, here. There is no parallel.

Actually its more like some people don't like the parallels, and so try to reject them out of hand WITHOUT EXPLAINING ANY DETAILS. But the whole point of bringing it up was not to make a parallel, so that is a strawman.

The point was about territory. Here, I will explain again: The Declaration of Independence was not the end of the American Revolutionary War. It came after the first year and continued another seven years. Lots of American territory was not held by the colonists, and lots changed hands during the course of the war. Thus, the fact of holding territory is COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT with regards to the validity of a declaration of independence.

Zorro there *are* attacks on IDF bases, and in my opinion (FWIW) they are fully legitimate targets.

Glad to hear that.

Because of a lack of accuracy? Because they are fired *everywhere*. In all directions.

Well I am not going to try and claim the intention of every single Hamas and non-Hamas Pal firing a rocket. Strange, isn't it, that Hamas has limited control and no consistency when Israel keeps assassinating their leaders. I am afraid the Pals may never get their act together on attacking only legit targets until the Israelis stop chopping off heads of the Hydra.

Furthermore, they are fired from within Arab schools and mosques, making it harder to avoid civilian casualties on the Palestinian side when the Israelis strike back. Human shields, in other words.

I have heard much of the claim about firing from within schools and mosques. But I never see much proof. Its just something that gets accepted as truth for being repeated over and over. Same with the charge of using human shields.

I don't trust the Pals. But I don't trust the IDF either. With these charges of firing from schools and mosques, one must trust the IDF. And while I am sure some cases exist, blowing those out of proportion is hardly a path to the truth. Further, just because one of those tiny rockets with limited range gets fired from a school or mosque, does not mean you FLATTEN IT with one ton bombs! What these guys do is not a mystery. Groups go somewhere on the sly, fire a rocket and then head for the hills. Imagine if someone did this in my yard while I was watching TV. Flattening my house and killing me is not a solution. Its just murder. And I was not a human shield as the perps are long gone. What I am is a victim of collective punishment.

But I tell you what, you give me three examples of rockets being fired from schools and mosques. I would like some proof of this claim. Then we can get in to the nuts and bolts of the claims.

But here, you might want to read this about U.N. complaints against the IDF striking their facilities as well as schools, hospitals, mosques and homes, not because of any firing, but just for seeing militia units or "suspicious figures" . Incidents in the Gaza War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The Israeli army's investigation, approved by Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi, stated that an IDF tank fired two shells at the house after suspicious figures were seen on the upper level of the doctor's home.[29][30] The doctor has questioned part of the IDF report, saying his home is located in "Jebaliya, northeast of Gaza City, not in the Gaza City neighborhood of Sajaiyeh; there was no firing from his house; and he saw no pamphlets with Israeli warnings to evacuate that the military said it dropped." "

Of course the Israelis are never accused of targeting civilians. Oh no. They just make "mistakes". Oops! Killed your teenage daughter with a tank shell for casting a silhouette on her bedroom window. Sorry bout that! But a kid loses a finger from a Hamas monster hobby rocket that flew over into Ashkelon? Ah, those murderous bastards did that on purpose!

If the Israelis desired civilian casualties, you'd see them in the tens or hundreds of thousands.

Israel knows its walking a fine line. If they went completely mass murder on the Pals, they would lose all western support. Given what they already do, I am amazed they have any.

Military technology is mutually exclusive from morality and from decisions made.

Funny. It suddenly seems to become totally relevant when the discussion is the decision to fire bomb Tokyo indiscriminately. Not saying you are guilty of that error. But I can easily say that the Pals have no idea where their rockets, practically their only means of striking the Israelis, will come down. However, when the IDF bombs a school, they know perfectly well where the bombs will come down. Plus they have other options.

Meanwhile, you have neglected to criticize Iran, a somewhat sophisticated nation in terms of miltary tech, which gives Fajr-5 missiles to the Pals and watches safely from the sidelines, suffering zero casualties.

Neglect? No. Its just another can of worms. The Fajr-5 situation is completely new. I have been mostly sticking to established history. Second, America and France arm the Israelis with weapons used to kill even more Pal innocents, while suffering zero casualties. But Iran is the bad guy?

That's pretty much a non-sequitor. Russia has no claim on America. The Israel situation is unique one, and hard to make parallels with.

They Jewish came to Palestine from different places in the world, They have places to go back to, for example the Yemeni Jews ( 400.000 ) they left their houses, farms, markets etc and moved to Palestine.. Same with Moroccan,Iraqi,Russian jews and other jews who came to palestine...They have their own land to go back to.
There were some jews in my village in Yemen and they left everything saying " We are going to Israel to fight !"..

At the same time, I do feel that the surrounding Arab nations are not willing to deal with the reality that Israel is here to stay (politically). Arab offered peace so many times but Jewish wants all Palestine + more land ( the great Israel ), Trust me if they want peace they would already got it.

I don't know about that 4000 years, but it's true that Jews have been there a very long time. It's where they're from.
And I've noticed that while Arabs complain about Russian-born Jews or Chilean Jews immigrating to Israel, they want to include Arabs born in Switzerland for what they call the "Right of Return." Seems like a double-standard to me.
I also think that since there are so many Arab lands, the one Jewish state on the planet should be allowed to persist.

I do trust you to the extent that you say what you believe, but I have to believe it's more complicated than that.
Israel is an amazing place full of culture + technology. Unfortunately, they are only known around the world for their relationship with the Palestinians, and for their settlements. I really wish those settlements would stop.

I don't know about that 4000 years, but it's true that Jews have been there a very long time. It's where they're from.
Does that mean they have the right to kill/kick people who are also originally from the same place ?

Do you know that there are Christians in Palestine,Syria,Jordan and Lebanon living since the Crusades ? Not the original Christians but there are some christians from that Crusades period (Christians who came from Europe) living side by side with us, And do you know that Lebanon president must be Christian ? we don't have any problem with that...

I also think that since there are so many Arab lands, the one Jewish state on the planet should be allowed to persist.
Why Arab lands ? why not Germany for example, Yeah they killed millions of jews as they say ! I mean Muslims protected jews and gave them lands to live in for too long time...You can back to history and read about Zionism and Israel.

well..You can create a nation in any place and make it looks great, for example, If i have enough money and power i can occupy 1 American stat and make it look better and then i bring Muslims from everywhere and give that stat a different name :)

I wish the majority of Americans will understand the roots of this issue, If you want to say " Arabs want to wipe Israel from the map" You must think of Palestine that is already wiped out from the map !

I'm happy to discuss this in a good mood and open mind.

Very true that anyone who said that needs a good smack.

However, it cannot be denied that since the late 1940's especially but also before, those who were born in Israel to immigrant parents cannot be blamed for being born there, nor can they be expected to "go back" to anywhere. The only claim that Jews/Israelis have to Israel that holds any universal and secular weight is the fact that they were born there, if they were born there.

Anyone claiming a religious reason needs a smack. They need to keep that at home and leave it out of politics.

There is no double-standard. Right of return is for people who had their lands stolen, or whose parents and grandparents had their land stolen. Jews from other nations cannot go point to a plot of land and honestly say "this is the place where my ancestors lived. This was their farm. That was their orchard.". In fact, many Jews cannot even claim direct ancestry to ancient Israelis, with their blue eyes and blond and red hair!

Does that mean they have the right to kill/kick people who are also originally from the same place ?
I'm sure you know the other side of that old argument, that Jews began by purchasing land fairly, not seizing it. That the Arabs sold them the worst, marshiest, most uninhabitable land at inflated prices. That since the Arabs, failing to prevent the formation of Israel by vote, went to plan B: trying to destroy Israel even as it formed. Supposedly, this was preceded by many Palestinians vacating their land in what they thought was a temporary move, fully intending to come back after the Jews were driven out. Except the Jews weren't driven out, and Israel became a real state. On top of that, the surrounding nations would not take in these freshly displaced Palestinians. Better to use them as an excuse to get rid of Israel than to help these neighbors.
Now, I am aware of the Arab side of the argument, that the above paragraph is fiction. Not that my personal opinion matters, but I think it's probably something in between the two extremes. At this point, both sides are so hardened that they fervently believe their own stories and it is increasingly hard to change even the minds of young people.
I suppose the one exception is that the liberal left is alive and well in Israel, and there are many Israelis who support a two-state solution. Not because they disbelieve the Israeli side of the dispute above, but because they acknowledge the current suffering of Palestinians. From their own press, though, Arabs prefer a one-state solution: one that does not include the existence of Israel at all.
I know about the Lebanese president. I also know a couple Christians from Egypt. They told me they are here in the States because of persecution by Muslims. And that was *before* the Muslim Brotherhood seized power in Egypt.
Why Arab lands ? why not Germany for example, Yeah they killed millions of jews as they say ! I mean Muslims protected jews and gave them lands to live in for too long time...You can back to history and read about Zionism and Israel.
You can go back a few posts and see above that I agree with you. In hindsight, I think Israel would have been better off if it had been formed someplace far away from the Near East.
well..You can create a nation in any place and make it looks great, for example, If i have enough money and power i can occupy 1 American stat and make it look better and then i bring Muslims from everywhere and give that stat a different name :)
Maybe someday, when Iran weakens the U.S. to the point that it is no longer a world superpower. Until then, you'll have to wait. :)
I wish the majority of Americans will understand the roots of this issue, If you want to say " Arabs want to wipe Israel from the map" You must think of Palestine that is already wiped out from the map !
Again, I for one would like to see it back on the map, and with full autonomy. I'm a little nervous about them having their own army, though.
I'm happy to discuss this in a good mood and open mind.
I'm glad for that, Hezam. I find you easy to talk to.

@zorro: my sister has blue eyes. What of it? Do you want to measure our skulls too?
In response to your earlier question: yes, you could call Iran the bad guy. I would never call the Israelis or the Palestinians the bad guys. Obviously, that would be an oversimplification. But, the Iranian government wants Israel gone and they want their empire back. They have no problem sacrificing the Palestinian people to get what they want. And, they are smart enough to fight by proxy, e.g. via Hezbollah. Unfortunately, they are hardest on their own population, a group of people that I find to be very progressive. After relocating Israel to another part of the globe, my second wish would be to free the Iranians of their government.

@Zorro: my sister has blue eyes. What of it? Do you want to measure our skulls too?

What of it? She has no measurable affiliation with the ancient country of Israel, that is what!

But, the Iranian government wants Israel gone and they want their empire back.

What is so wrong with wanting the government of Israel gone and replaced by another? Many pray for the same thing in Syria, and did so also for Libya and even armed rebels for that to happen.

As for Iran wanting her empire back, dude, like, what the hell? The last time Iran was in a war, it was attacked by Saddam Hussein! That was a quarter century ago! Whether before or after, I cannot name any modern attacks of empire or plunder from Iran. Can you? I cannot name any Iranian military bases outside of Iran, can you?

Meanwhile, the sun never sets on American military bases, and you will find some on either side of Iran. Iran has shown incredible restraint, even with America having egged on Saddam and American wanton violations of Iranian airspace, not to mention America shooting down that Iranian airliner and constant warship presence just outside of their waters.

They have no problem sacrificing the Palestinian people to get what they want.

Right. The Pals are just unwilling victims of Iran. Sure. They don't actually want those missiles. They don't actually want to fight for independence from Israel. They just do it because the Iranians told them to. Sure!

After relocating Israel to another part of the globe, my second wish would be to free the Iranians of their government.

Amen to both of those!

One thing that always vexed me about this is that after the Holocaust, after the Nazis get vanquished from Europe, that so many Jews opted to go pitch a tent right next to the Arabs, of all places to pitch a tent! Its like yelling "Hit me again!".

You will notice that escaped Nazis went to South America, NOT Soviet Russia. Damn.

That's an interesting, if uninformed opinion. I'm imagining Israeli customs letting me through -- I have brown eyes -- but holding my blue-eyed sister back. Sounds very Naziesque. I wonder if my nose is the right shape to connect me to ancient Israel to your satisfaction...

Hah, if only that were the reality, the extent of their wishes.

Uninformed? I am telling you facts of basic genetics taught in American high schools! Neither you nor your sister (if you share mother and father both) could be more than 25 percent semitic (the race of pretty much all Jews 4000 years ago), and I know this because your sister has blue eyes, which requires a pair of recessive genes found only in the white race. Its not Nazi. Its Gregor Mendel!

Hah, if only that were the reality, the extent of their wishes.

So you read minds now?

Actions speak louder than mind reading. If any country today wants world domination, its the U.S.A.!

For Zorro
'Nature' is a journal that is scientific enough for Sagredo, so I hope it's good enough for you.
Two new genome studies of Jews worldwide prove that the Jewish people ツ― long called the ツ"People of the Book,ツ" the ツ"Chosen Peopleツ" or, in unkind circles, ツ"those peopleツ" ツ― are, indeed, a people after all.
The first study, by researchers at New York's Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, found that Jews across the globe share distinct genetic traits that are different from other groups and that trace back to the ancient Middle East.
Researchers say the study, published in the American Journal of Human Genetics, puts to rest age-old questions about whether Jews are a group of unrelated people who share a religious ideology or a distinct ethnicity with common ancestry.
...
But skeptics have long questioned whether the people who daven in Brooklyn have any real ancestral link to those early Jewish people.
The studies, then, are like a genetic coat of arms.
ツ"It seems that most Jewish populations, and therefore most Jewish individuals, are closer to each other [at the genetic level], and closer to the Middle Eastern populations, than to their traditional host population in the Diaspora,ツ" Israeli geneticist Doron Behar, author of the Nature study, told the BBC.

Genetic testing raises an age-old question — are the Jews a people, or a religion?

As a white American, I'm not impressed at all with racial/ethnic claims to lands. I do believe in private ownership rights, though.

If I felt otherwise, I'd have to vacate my property to Aleut Indians and ship myself back to Europe, from where my grandparents and great-grandparents emigrated to the US. Actually they'd have to cut me into parts, one-quarter of me going to Scotland, a quarter to Germany, and the remaining half to Slovakia. I'm sure they'd find a place for my remains. Slovakia would probably use me for fertilizer.

So, you aren't going to sell me on an ethnic claim, either way, to Israel/Palestine. And I don't believe in the legitimacy of religious or racial/ethnic governments, so forget about that one too. In such nations, the rights of minorities always suffer. Modern, free, rule-of-law nations guard the rights of individuals against majorities of the populace.

To me, the equities turn on the question of how the individual Israeli or Arab occupants came into possession of the lands. If they bought the land in a voluntary sale, the land should be theirs. If they ran off the original occupants and stole the lands, they should give them back to the rightful owners or pay fair compensation. Palestinians willing to live as civilized human beings in mixed company should be allowed to return, and granted full citizen rights if willing to swear allegiance to . . .

. . . well, can't we compromise, fellow members in the tribe of human beings, and call it something like Pale-real? Or maybe Is-estine?

As a white American, I'm not impressed at all with racial/ethnic claims to lands. I do believe in private ownership rights, though.
If I felt otherwise, I'd have to vacate my property to Aleut Indians and ship myself back to Europe, from where my grandparents and great-grandparents emigrated to the US. Actually they'd have to cut me into parts, one-quarter of me going to Scotland, a quarter to Germany, and the remaining half to Slovakia. I'm sure they'd find a place for my remains. Slovakia would probably use me for fertilizer.
I wanted to discuss this for long time ago but i was afraid if it will hurt somebody.
Most of the Red Indians have been murdered long time ago, But the Palestinians are still everywhere inside and outside Palestine, The Palestinian case is not old, It's been 60 years since the creation of Israel, And Jewish still have lands & houses to get back to.

You can't buy a land in any Nation to Declare a nation in it !!!
When Jewish were buying lands It was fine with all Muslims but they created a nation [ which is an Enemy ] and occupied Jerusalem !!
the jewish kept buying lands in Palestine for long time and it was fine...not even 1 jewish was killed for buying lands.

It didn't work, it's against US government plan !

You bring up an important point, Roland, because clearly the Americans never paid the Iroquois or the Aleuts or Wampanoags for land in North America (including Alaska. Seward paid Russia, but is that like buying a stolen car?). Not even Manhattan with its oft-told legend about $x or 24 beads of wampum for the Lenape.

The new National Geographic has an article about the tunnels of Gaza, and it begins with a description of how often it has changed hands throughout the ages. Of course, it always changed hands by force, not by legal sale. So, at what point does might-make-right come into effect? And how much influence should the rest of the world have? I don't know. I guess China, Taiwan and Japan are going through this now with the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands. There aren't even any people living on those islands, but look how hotly disputed the claims are.

If history is any indication, the answer is a resounding No.
