Although I do love "keigo" used even between friends (親しき仲にも礼儀あり）, I think that "hai" won't be used between friends--provided that they are young, male, and not overheard by anybody else. (I added the last condition because my husband and I taught our son to use -desu/-masu in public, even when speaking with close friends, and some of his friends do that, too.). But, I'm not sure whether this applies 100%. I feel that some guys will use "hai" casually, depending on their upbringing and of their friends. Since the Japanese language is heavily dependent on the relationship between persons, I'm sure people will tag along and speak politely to a person who prefers to speak that way, no matter how close they are. Such cases must be rare today and probably not nonexistent. Just my two cents.

If someone said "It never snows in the city of Los Angeles" are you going to keep insisting that it was not "never" just because it HAS indeed snowed in LA a few times in the last 100 years?

In fact it has only snowed once here in los angles, I grew up in LA. Anyways, in the history of LA it has only snowed here once and that was in 1918. >_<

Okay, I WAS wrong. It wasn't a few times. It was 20!
But I think it's still acceptable to say that "it never snows in Los Angeles."
Hey, there was even a song titled "It Never Rains in California" by Albert Hammond and it rained cats and dogs here for weeks. Nobody demanded a change in the title.
