Hi ...I am in an online college class through an external degree program in Vermont. We are covering the theme of heroes and myth of various cultures and times in history. This week we are reading about Japan. A questions was asked in the discussion board on the class wite.....what is the meaning of the comb in Japanese myth and culture? A person gets turned into a comb in one story. Another person breaks off a tooth of a comb and lights it to see in the dark. One classmate said that being the giver of a comb is a bad thing if it is associated with bad luck for the person receiving it. Can anyone explain this to me from the viewpoint of someone who knows firsthand about the Japanese culture?

The web site displays the sacred Kojiki text. In looking at Aston's Chronicles of Japan "Nihongi ", Iaznagi no Mikoto removed a comb from his hair and broke off its end tooth and made a torch in order to look at Izanami no Mikoto. There is much symbolism in their relationship, which I am not certain of.
A footnote explaining the superstition of avoiding the use of a single light at night and/or throwing away a comb says that if anyone picks up a comb, which has been thrown away is transformed into another person.
