I just found this site, so this is my first question. みなさん、はじめまして。
I have some questions from a children's book I'm attempting to read. One of the problems is that it's written entirely in kana, and the homophones give me problems. Fortunately, there are spaces between the words!
I've inserted the kanji that I think are correct. Could you please check my translation and the kanji I chose.
The story is about two brothers, who are always competing, playing in the woods. They come to a big rock. One of them, チェリちゃん, says:
「にい（兄）さん、ぼくは こっちから のぼ（上）るからね。 にい（兄）さんは そっちから のぼ（上）りなよ。 どっちが さき（先）に てっぺんに つ(着）くか、きょうそう（競走） しようよ。 どうせ ぼくが か（勝）つに き（決）まってるけどね。」
My translation I'm sure is not perfect, but do I have the general idea correct? "Big brother, I'll climb up from this side, ok. You climb up from that side. Let's have a race and see which one arrives at the top first. Anyway, it's certain that I'll beat you, isn't it."
Then his brother, エドモンちゃん, says:
「もう 一ど（度） いって みろ。 おまえを ぶって やるからね。 いつだって おまえが な（泣）くに きまってるんだ。」
My translation: "Try saying that again, 'cuz I'll hit you, huh. When that happens it's certain that you'll cry."
The next passage:
こんな ふう（風）に、ふたり（二人）は よく い(言）いあ（合）いを したり、けんか（喧嘩）を したり します。そのくせ、ふたり（二人）の うち(家）の どちらかが そば（側）に いなく なると、のこ（残）った ほう（方）は、すっかり げんき（元気）が、な（無）くなってしまうのです。
"This is the way the two often quarreled and argued. And yet, at home, when one of them was not there, the one left (alone) ended up thoroughly sad (literally 'his good spirits completely vanished'??)"
Please correct any mistakes or misunderstandings. I appreciate it. おねがいします。
