Chaining -na adjectives directly?

Heys all, i was taught that we had to insert a "de" particle after a -na adjective if we wish to "chain" it. However i came along this sentence:

彼はまだ元気盛んだ。

so i was wondering why is it that it is 元気盛ん instead of 元気で盛ん?

I've never heard of 元気盛ん... wonder if it is a mistake and should read 血気盛ん which is one word meaning robust and energetic.
