Japan's demographic transformation continues, with the latest census data showing the most significant drop in the Japanese population on record, alongside the largest-ever rise in the number of foreign residents.

The number of Japanese nationals stood at 120,653,227, down by 908,574 people (a 0.75% decrease) from the previous year. This marks the largest decline since the survey began in 1968, and the first time the annual drop has surpassed 900,000. In contrast, the foreign resident population rose sharply to 3,677,463, an increase of 354,089 people (10.65% year-on-year)—the largest gain since foreign population figures were first recorded in 2013.

The Japanese population has been declining for 16 consecutive years since its peak in 2009, with the decrease reaching a record high for the fourth consecutive year. On the other hand, the foreign resident population has increased for three consecutive years. Although it temporarily declined during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been growing by more than 10% annually since 2023. The combined total of Japanese and foreign residents was 124,330,690, a decrease of 554,485 (0.44%) compared to the previous year. The census shows that the accelerating decline of the Japanese population continues to be offset by the equally accelerating increase in the foreign resident population. In the past year, the number of Japanese children born was 687,689, a decrease of 41,678 from the previous year, marking a record low.

Foreign residents now make up 3% of Japan's total population!

Japan has recorded its steepest decline in the number of Japanese nationals to date, while its foreign resident population continues to grow. Tsurumi Ward in Yokohama, long recognised as a leader in fostering coexistence with foreign communities, stands out in this context. According to a Ministry report, Japan's total population as of 1 January 2025 was 124,336,690, of which 120,653,227 were Japanese nationals. In contrast, the number of foreign residents has reached an unprecedented 3,677,463 — the highest since records began in 2013 — now representing roughly 3% of the country's population.

In July, Justice Minister Suzuki stated that the proportion of foreigners in Japan could exceed 10% by 2040. With this in mind, Tsurumi Ward in Yokohama has garnered attention for its efforts in promoting coexistence. As of 1 August, Tsurumi's population is approximately 300,000, with 17,755 foreigners, making up about 6% of the total population—double the national average. Walking through the shopping streets, one can find numerous South American restaurants offering cuisine from Brazil, Bolivia, and Peru. There are also many Asian restaurants, including those from China and India.
