A knife attack in Osaka's Minami district late last week left three 17-year-old boys wounded, one of them fatally. The assault took place late on 14 February near the youth gathering spot beneath the Glico sign in Dotonbori, an area long associated with teenagers meeting at night. Ryunosuke Kamata, a company employee from Nara Prefecture, was stabbed in the chest and later died. Another victim remains unconscious in critical condition. The third suffered serious injuries.

Police arrested Ryo Iwasaki on suspicion of murder. He has reportedly denied intent to kill. Investigators say the fatal wound pierced Kamata's heart, and that other stab wounds reached the liver and neck. They view the injuries as consistent with strong intent. A video obtained by reporters appears to show a man believed to be Iwasaki walking through the area shortly before his arrest, discarding an object and putting on what appeared to be gloves. Officers say the suspect wore gloves during the attack and may have changed them.
