Big Cities or Small Towns?

While I was in Japan I lived in both the big city (Minami Shinagawa, Tokyo) and medium sized towns (in Shizuoka Pref.). It seems people going to Japan always want to go to the big cities, but I acutally preferred living in the smaller towns. It was easier to take the trains, I spent more time with my coworkers because they weren't so busy with other things, there was more natural beauty, and I wasn't stressed out by hectic surroundings.

What size cities did you have a more positve experience living in in Japan?

Big cities.

Not that there is anything wrong with the countryside; that's where I'm living right now and I love it. But faced with the choice of Wakayama and Osaka, I'd take Osaka anyday. I tend to operate on erractic hours, and when you live in a town where everything is closed by 8:00pm, it makes things difficult. On the other hand, I love the remote mountains and take advantage of them to go hiking whenever I can.

Tough choice, but I guess I'm just a city boy.

I loved my time spent in small towns. You can always go to the city for the day or night (whichever suits your need) but living in the countryside is so much more peaceful...luckily where I am now, I have the best of both worlds: My house feels like the countryside, but I am only 15 minutes from a major shopping center that doesn't close until midnight.

Well, I was born, raised and still live in Philadelphia, so I'm used to big cities. Being in Tokyo was one neverending adventure, especially since I'm a freak for trains and loved riding the lines of JR East. The lights, the skyscrapers, the hustle and bustle, I never tired of it!

I chose a medium-sized town as a compromise.

I'm tired of living in Tokyo and would very much love to live in a small town. But, I can't drive and must depend on public transit systems. I think I need to live near a railroad station all my life.

I've love to live in the Izu Peninsula but am afraid of the Great Tokai Earthquake!! :shiver:

I chose any on the poll since I could see both positive & negative sides of both places.

I enjoyed the time when I lived in Tokyo; there are just so many things to do and never got bored of it, but it was always nice to go home, Gumma which was a medium sized town I would say, to see my family and friends from high school.
If I were to live in Japan, I would go somewhere else like Hokkaido , which I have never been to but reminds me of the town where I live right now.
