"Loneyly In Gorgeus" お はなして です。 貴方 わ?
すみません。意味が分かりませんね。 I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you're
trying to say...

Elizabethさん:もしかしてAmiraHimeさんが『「Lonely In Gorgeous」を聞いています。』と言ってみましたか?(Maybe AmiraHime was trying to say "I'm listening to 'Lonely in Gorgeous'"?)

ありがとうElizabethさん。
ごめん、私はこの会話「かいわ」が初心「しょしん」ままが欲しい「ほしい」と思います「おもいます」。
頑張って「がんばって」ください。

そして、すぐ 私のこいびとはアメリカに来ます「きます」。じつわ、明日の夜「あしたのよる」彼女「かのじょ」は着きます「つきます」。わくわくなります。
And so, soon my girlfriend will come to America. Actually, tomorrow night she will arrive. I am getting[becoming] excited.

Yes i agree, Speaking with each other is important i think. But she wants to speak a lot of english so we will speak english. I want to speak a lot of Japanese but I will have to endure it. Probably will be doing a lot of translating so I will be able to practice alot. I also shaved my head and beard. (I don't know which kanji to use for "hige") My appearance has to look good. heheheh.

No, that was all clear enough...sorry for any misunderstanding but the trans probably is useful for someone else. What I'm really curious about is this earlier bit. I have some ideas on it just nothing definite yet.

はこの会話「かいわ」が初心「しょしん」ま まが欲しい「ほしい」と思います「おもいます」。

I wanted to say. "I want to keep this conversation basic." Basically i didn't want us to get into anything to advanced for the beginners to feel the need to avoid this thread all together. seeing tons of kanji in a "beginner" thread can be very intimidating. I know it is for me.

/signed

if writing kanji in a thread like this, i find it helpful if the hiragana is placed next to it. i agree that this method is a ball-ache for the person writing, but...

(例) (れい)

僕(ぼく)はヨーキーと申(もう)します。
今(いま)日本(にほん)の小学校(しょうがっこう)で働きます(はたらきます)。

EDIT: small typo

I don't like the parenthesized readings because they break the flow of the text for me. It would be lovely if we could use furigana (of course there's also the issue of the Safari people making it work with the browser).

According to 明鏡国語辞典 (めいきょうこくごじてん), ひげ meaning mustache is 髭, for hair on the jaw it's 鬚, and for hair on the cheeks it's 髯. However, 髭 is used for all of them together as well.

furigana would be great.

i have never seen it implemented on a forum though, and i certainly dont know how to use it in programs like MS Word and such...

I agree. I don't like it either.
That's why I placed the romaji readings under "normal" Japanese writing in my "Haru-urara" thread, which is troublesome for the writer but much easier to read for advanced and beginner learners alike. (I considered hiragana, too, but opted for romaji.)
As I posted earlier in this thread, I think using hiragana/katakana with the simplest kanji only is appropriate for this thread.
There's "Conversation Practice for Beginners" for more advanced persons.
Of course, furigana will be best, but I've never seen that in any Japanese language forum...

みなさん、こんにちは。
I've watching this thread for a while but could not find the good timing to join.

Reading this thread, I'm also wondering what is the best way...
Maybe as epigene san suggested, to stick to the very basic vocabulary in this thread which is specifically for the beginners, and do not use kanji as far as possible, or writing Japanese with kanji and the same sentences only in kana below it...?

I do agree about furigana!
The only 'exception' I know is the forum of "Teach Yourself Japanese" site.
message about "ruby" function
But it is not a question of browser but the programme of forum itself.
I wish we had a similar function here, but I assume it is not easy to introduce such a function..

Whichever the method, it would be appreciated if kanji signs have their kana equivalent somewhere in text, so one can learn and follow the discussions here ^_^

Lets get this thread back on-track and actually "chat" rather than discuss how we should chat
i suggest we talk about an easy topic... (for example) likes and dislikes.
ぼくは日本に来た(きた)前に納豆(なっとう)を食べたことがありませんでした。 友達(ともだち)が「納豆はまずい」と言ってたけど、本当に食べてみたかった。日本に来て、すぐ納豆をたべた。 何となくぼくは納豆が好きでした。 だから、みんなに質問(しつもん)があります。納豆を食べてみった人は誰(だれ)ですか。食べたら、どう思いましたか。
before i came to japan, i hadn't tried natto. my friend said that, "Natto is disgusting." but i honestly wanted to try eating it. after i came to japan i tried it straight away and, for some reason or other, i actually liked it. therefore, i have a question for you all... who has tried natto? if you have tried it, what did you think?
yorkii
(please correct my japanese if there are any blaring mistakes.

I like epigene's idea too. さすがepigeneさんですね!

I was going to post that as an example, but you beat me to it.

I'm assuming you're using IE on a Windows machine. I'm running Safari on a Mac, and none of the Netscape browsers (Netscape, Firefox, Safari) have ruby support, so even on the TYJ Message Board I end up with readings in parentheses. It isn't just on that message board, either: anywhere there's furigana I see it as parentesized hiragana after the kanji. That's why I brought up the browser issue.

My pleasure. 私のほうこそうれしいのです。
それが簡単であるなら、分かり易いです。

一所懸命(いっしょけんめい)納豆を一度食べようとしましたが、やっぱり、いやなにおいではきそうなんだったよ。腐(く)らないとは思うけど においは味(あじ)と比べると確か(たしか)にずっと悪い(落ちるん)ですよね。
yorkii さんは、納豆に塩、(しおい)こしょうなどをたくさんつけましたか?

Are you trying to translate the Tomoko kawase lyrics?

Yukoi Michael: nope, I simply like the melody of the song ^_^

Guys, I still do not understand Kanji ... stop being so mean ;P

I try to remember the hiragana gloss for most of mine....anyone can look up a new word outside of that considerable concession.
