Tech Automated delivery robots to begin service in April

From April this year, automated delivery robots remotely monitored by humans will take up their service on Japan's public roads.

Trials for deliveries of food and daily necessities by robots have been conducted in residential and business districts. A test of the DeliRo unmanned delivery robot took place in the Tsukishima district of Tokyo's Chuo Ward last month. The robot moved at a speed close to the pace of an adult's brisk walk on a major street to carry a hamburger from a store to an office located about 500 meters away.

Saw a picture of about 10 delivery robots here in the US all stuck on the same corner in just an inch or two of snow with no traction. They had little to no ground clearance and wondered why the company thought they would work in slippery conditions.

In the US I'd expect people to attack the robot to take the packages if not parts of the robot.

So many mixed feelings. I understand that people are worried about hygiene and covid, but this only eliminates delivery drivers from the many people in the food service system. If only they were piloted rather than just monitored, more people could have jobs.

Aren't the circumstances such that there are not enough people to fill the jobs though? I think the need is driving this kind of innovation.
There was a lot of hype about this sort of thing in the U.S. too a few years ago (drones dropping off packages and robots like this) but it seems to have died down for now. Underpaid humans seem to be the better option to maximize corporate profits for now.
