Well I've just learned that I'll be in Boston (Lowell) around september for about 6 months. I just have a question: can anyone tell me about the place?

I think there are a couple of people who are either from Boston or live close to the city, but I'll just chip in my two yen from my several visits to the city.

It's a historic town, as you may already know, but maybe not very impressive since you appear to live in France. Knowing mainly Japan and the US West Coast, the city (and New England) has a totally different ambience from the rest of the US, I think. It is relatively safer than many major US cities. (I love cities where I can walk the sidewalks without constant fear of being mugged.)

Coming to Boston in September, you'll be arriving in a beautiful season with colorful autumn foliage, with lots of tourists flocking to New England.

The food is great--New England style, Italian, Chinese and lots more. I love dining out in Boston. (Japanese sushi is also great in Boston. Try the tuna there, even some of the best restaurants here in Tokyo serve sushi with tuna caught off the coast of New England.)

The drawback is the winter, when subzero temperature appears to be the norm. Lots of snow!! Moist hair and towel got frozen immediately outdoors!

That's my personal opinion. I heard from my kids that Swedes think the city is much warmer than Stockholm!

Hi Dreamer !!

Keep me posted on when you will be going. Portland, Maine is only 3 hours north of Boston by train or bus. I'd love to come down and meet you and spend some time helping you get settled in.I go there a lot and have relatives down there. Getting to meet a longtime JREF friend would be great!

epigene makes Boston sound cool. I couldn't think of anything to say except "It's cold in winter". I guess I take my town for granted.


There are a lot of things to do here. There's the aquarium, the museum of science, the Imax theatre, there are planty of historical tours(though I've never been on any), the duck tours, the museum of art, the arnold arboretum, and fenway park. I think there's snow boarding in the blue hills. And they might still have horse back riding in franklin park, I'm not sure. But there is golf and a zoo.


My brother says "Go to Chinatown after 8:00pm" But You really shouldn't listen to him.
 
Yeah, I remember being told to NOT be in Chinatown after sundown. Same thing with walking through the Fens.

My son used to walk through the Fens late at night between school and his apartment.
The kids have also taken me to Chinatown after dark.
Is that possible because we're Asians? Or just plain lucky?
 
I'm not sure, but I knew a guy who got mugged walking through the Fens at night. I think it was around 9 or 10. Anyway, I remember being told that at the orientation. I was told about Chinatown from friends, so I'm not sure how reliable that was, but I've heard it about a few different Chinatowns. :?

Your son lived in the Fens? Behind Fenway park?
 
Yes, my son crossed the Fens every day, often as late as midnight to get back home. (I've told him to make a detour at night, but he doesn't listen to me... )
The kids told me they've seen people being mugged or beaten up but never were themselves.
Maybe they scared people off by how they dressed.

That's crazy that they've seen people getting beaten up or mugged.

I got lost there once during the day in the middle of some grass that was taller than me, and it was wierd. There were people just haning out, like they were waiting to have some not quite legitimate encounter of some sort. It kind of freaked me out, and I made sure that I never did that again (I thought I was taking a shortcut).
 
My brother only mentioned Chinatown because he recently was there after dark and saw two she-male prostitutes lounging on top of a police car. He's not accustomed to seeing prostitutes... or she-males for that matter.
 
Yeah, I guess it depends on what you consider entertaining. Hahaha

Maybe we can turn Dreamer's trip into a New England JREF member get together? If he's going to be there 6 months, we should have time to work something out!

My Chinese friends don't even go to Chinatown after 8pm (they have dinner early and get out)... Also, Vietnamese friends don't go either (unless it's to the "Asian" adult club).... My Japanese friends usually stick to Porters Square (Porter Exchange Building) or hit the other Japanese restaurants (Fugakyu, Ginza to name a couple). Also, Japonnaise is a great bakery... (not sure why I'm talking about food.... must be hungry)....... Boston is great around Harvard Square and the culture is interesting... Walk the freedom trail in Charletown and have dinner in the North End... (AKA "Little Italy).
 
Good suggestions. There's also a really good little sushiya on Newbury Street in the Back Bay area whose name I forget. If anyone could pick me up on that one that would be great.

Fire & Ice is a pretty cool restaurant in Cambridge, around the House of Blues. I think there's another one too, but I forget where it is. You give them the raw ingredients and they cook it for you in front of you.

If this thread goes on like that, I won't even dare to go out after 8pm
Still, it's not like I'll be in Boston itself but more likely in Lowell... (the company's called Parexel) ^^
 
You're safe being out after 8 pm in Boston in most places, just not Chinatown or the Fens. They're pretty far apart, too, so don't worry too much about it.

I'm not too familiar with Lowell. I remember hearing about it, and I think I knew a guy from there, but that's about all there is left in my head regarding it.
