Anyone ever had to deal with a Japanese person suddenly getting mad at you after bottling something up for a long time? I know this happens in any country, but in Japan people seem especially unable to work out their conflicts and emotions rationally. I've had an uncle and a penpal do it so far, and my own mother to some degree, and judging from my knowledge of Japanese society it seems like it might be a really common problem.
The problem being that they hold in all their anger and resentment, feeling like they can't talk about it, which leads to it all being released in the most immature way possible (angry name calling) instead of calmly working things out. If you try to explain your side of the story, they act like you're too "logical" and that Japanese can communicate without speaking (hah!) and thus communication should be unnecessary. My uncle was especially into this Nihonjinron stuff about Japanese being "wet", irrational and pure people with no need for logic, that made him unable to see my side of things or come to terms with our disagreements.
I'm a pretty rational person, though I'm also quite emotional and overly sensitive. I know there are a lot of times in Japanese society where you just have to suck it up, but I believe in being honest where it counts, and that means letting a friend or family member know when there's a problem. When I move to Japan, am I going to have to deal with this all the time? If so, any advice on dealing with it?
