Well I'm off to Japan in 3 days. And of course, the thing I'm dreading the most is the 10 hour flight, 4 hour layover in Tokyo, and then the hour and a bit flight to Nagoya.

So what should I bring for entertainment during this ~15 hour trip. (More if you include car ride out the airport, and the wait before I board.)

I've actually flown to Japan before, but I was with 15 other kids my age, so it wasn't too bad. There was only an hour of boredom out of the 10. The other 9 were quality entertainment.

I'm bringing a regular book to read, my copy of Remembering the Kanji to study, my diskman, and my CD collection. Will this be enough to keep somebody with my incredibly short attention span amused? Or will I go insane and start screaming halfway through the flight?

I'm not going to get into my whole fear of transfering, I have no idea what to do. But I'll have to ask the flight attendents for help on that one.
 
get all the brad sucks songs from his website ( www.bradsucks.net ) he is an AWESOME canadian one man band (that gives his songs for free to anyone that wants them 😲).. i couldnt have made my last flight without him ^^

Sleep? Drink? I was lucky because flying on JAL, they had free movies and video games in every seat. I'd suggest a couple of decent books, maybe a magazine or two in case your eyes start bugging you, definitely the music you plan on bringing, and my personal favorite, crossword puzzles. With music on and a crossword puzzle in your lap, time can fly...but that's not for everyone. Definitely try to get some rest on the plane...I remember there being free alcohol, so there's your solution to "I'm not tired."

MeAndroo --> I'm 16, no alcohol for me. Unfortunately I'm also one of those people that just can't sleep on a plane. I'm flying JAL though, so does that mean I get movies and games?!? Yay!
 
I wouldn't advise you to pratice your English by writing words connected to suicide bombers like the Japanese bloke a couple of weeks ago. Anyone remember reading that story in the news?
 
OMG..lucky girl !!!!You get to go allready, I'll have to wait for this winter :( ...If I were you I'd take : books,magz,music,GBA (if possible :-D) Have a good time and flight !!! 🙂
 
Play A New Game!!

Called "Find the Sky Marshal" ! HE'll have some kind of coat on to hide his gun and probably sit in the rear of the plane next to the aisle. You walk down to the ladies room , pretend to trip, and do a quick frisk job. See how many guys you have to fall on before you find the gun!
If your really into the game, you scream "My GOD, this man has a gun!" when you find the right one. You get double points if you find the LADY sky marshal. This game should blow away a few hours of time. Best to wait till you're way out over the ocean to start so they don't land and put you off the plane! Good luck!

Perscription drugs to help you sleep or a book. Drinking would be my suggestion but as your underage you cant....

Hmm... I have a few options.

PLAN A: Get drunk, piss people off, and then get arrested for underage drinking.

PLAN B: Get drugged, pass out, and have to get carried off the plane by the flight attendents.

PLAN C: Go to the washroom every 15 minutes, then fall on random guys in search of a gun. (Which if I saw, I would probably start screaming because I've never seen a gun besides on the occasional police officer, and on TV.)

PLAN D: Watch bad movies, eat bad food, listen to music, and kill my eyes from reading for a long time.

So far I'm thinking that D is the best option.

Thanks for all the input everybody. It's been fun XD. Now to pack...

BTW, this whole thing sucks, because I have to wear my glasses for the flight. I can't keep my contacts in for that long T_T This causes great sadness...I hate my glasses, they're all librarian-like.
 
lets see last time i flew i forgot my backpack with all my cds and cdplayer and everything else in it in the car. so i ended up stealing a deck of cards and a book from somewhere. didnt read much on the plane though they had movies, which id listen to in other languages, also played cards with people sitting around me, wasnt much of a window view since it was night and was over the ocean anyway. played around in the bathroom before and after going over the equator, cant see the toilet water go one way or the other so i had to plug the sink. hacky sack didnt work out so well on the plane but was good on the layovers. oh and id make trash sculptures whenever they would give us food.
 
Yoou could play the old "pickup a flight attendant" game, something for you both to do at 3am in the morning on a long flight ;)
 
I would watch movies and play computer games....(and drink & sleep!!).
 
I suspect the single most boring part of the entire trip will be the 4 hours at Narita. Japanese airports are not like the shopping malls with airplanes that you find in most other countries.
Are you transferring to a domestic flight or just another international flight that happens to be stopping off in Nagoya? Where did you tell your host family to meet you in Nagoya? The domestic terminal is about 1km from the international terminal. Ten years ago I remember arriving in the country and shortly afterwards thinking that I might very well be out of a job before I'd even started. I waited at the international terminal for 4 hours before my boss finally turned up - and then she proceeded to blame me!

why did your boss blame you?.. any reason the rest of us should look out for so as to not end up in the same situation?

Yeah I'm thinking I'm going to die in Narita, whether from jet lag, getting lost, or just boredom.

I'm transfering to a domestic flight to Nagoya. I didn't want to fly Air Canada since it's been so haywire lately, and JAL only had that setup for the right day.

That must have sucked, 4 hours...I can't imagine. You'd just be so tired and worried. I think my host family will figure it out, I gave them the flight info. Also there is a guy from the school who speaks some english meeting me there.

Now to figure out what clothes I'm gonna need for the year...

(Did I mention I'm packing right now, I'm just online while I take a break from the hard decisions...like what books to bring :D )
 
You could have taken a train (or 2) and made it in the same time. Plus its more amusing.
 
You Could...

convince all the passengers you work for the FAA testing pilot skills. Tell them you need their help to test pilot reactions to surprise plane movements. Have them all rush to one side at once, count to 10 and all rush to the other side. Give the pilot a chance to relax from that a little and then do the same, only all rush to the eront, and then the back. Everyone will get to stretch their legs and the pilot will be much more awake & alert.

Frank --> That's horrible...but fun. You better stop giving me ideas or knowing me I'll actually try a few of them in desperation.

The last time I went I had a friend who speaks french fairly well, so we wandered around the airport pretending to be lost french tourists. Didn't work too well seeing as I speak next to no french, and we were still in Canada so the airport had staff who speak french.

Oh well it was a fun 20 minutes. I highly recommend it if you're ever in the Vancouver Airport ^_~
 
Ok just to update. I'm here.

It was an adventure between the 10 hour flight, 4 hour layover, 2 hour delay, 1 hour flight, and then customs.

Host family seems nice. I gotta go. Have to find I way to explain that I need a alien regestration card.

Woot.
