At the very beginning of covid , my high school buddy died just 2 weeks after catching it. That made a believer out of me.

For some, there's no limit to the amount of evidence that can be hand-waved away. I know people who lost family members and were convinced that the hospitals listed them as covid deaths just for some kind of payout, or even more sickening, think that the hospitals murdered their loved ones in one way or another. I know so many healthcare workers who burned out and quit during covid because of the horrific conditions they had to work under, and then be vilified by the people they are trying to help. There are so many parallels to the Spanish Flu pandemic a century ago, it is disheartening but not surprising at all that history has and will again repeat itself.

When their trust in expertise and vetted information wore thin, many people turned to the internet--a bottomless sources of lies of all shapes and sizes--and sought answers that validated their suspicions, excused their prejudices, and promised a complex, yet simple answer. This usually came in the form of a web of conspiracies that seemed to connect together and explain that all of the ills of the world were at the behest of a small number of elites. It's hopeful, but incredibly misguided.
