2 week Tokyo trip

Hi everyone,
Im making a trip to tokyo and was wondering if you guys could recommend a good starting point to stay. I want to be in the city and near places so i can leave and walk to eat, shop etc . Is there a particular part of Tokyo you guys can recommend? I'll be there for only a couple of weeks,,,maybe I'll stay in a capsule for the first few nights..thanks in advance.

Depending how old (or young) you are, I would say for a first-timer the place to stay near is Shibuya. There's capsule hotels and ryokans in the area. Plenty of eateries (McDonalds, Yoshinoya, etc.), record and video stores, bookstores, clothing stores, movie theaters, coffee houses (Starbucks, etc.) and just plenty of things to see and do. The main station can be reached by the Yamanote line as well as the Hanzomon, Inokashira and Ginza lines. When do you plan on going?

But yea, that sounds like my kind of area...I just want to be somewhere where I can walk right out and explore without having to take a train or worry about where I am at night. On June 30th.~

The only way you'll find a reasonably priced nightclub/bar is if you meet, befriend and exchange contacts with the people who are in charge of the clubs, bartenders, DJs etc. - so instead of you spending hours online trying to find a cheap nightclub or anything you should just go to Tokyo, wear your best outfits, be friendly, make friends with everyone and you'll have free drinks, free nightclub VIP entry and the greatest time for free.

It's either that or being a jerk and paying for it, no pun intended.

HAHA...nice. I guess this shouldn't be too bad...do the bars/clubs close early? like here its 1-2am..everything dies down big time. I guess ppl gotta sleep.

Some close around 1am when the trains stop, but most only really get started then and will kick you out about 5:00-6:00

I still don't understand why anyone would willingly subject themselves to a capsuel hotel. I get claustrophobic just thinking about it.

My feelings exactly! Why would someone want to travel half way around the world to Japan and sleep in a capsule? It really makes no sense to me. I can understand it if you were a local and got drunk and needed a place to sleep. And, as I mentioned in the capsule hotel thread, where would you put your luggage if it couldn't fit in their lockers?

Yea, I've been pondering the capsule thing...seems kinda a waste of time..so, I booked some nights at a youth hostel in Asakusa. Should I buy an umbrella there or take one from the states?

Umbrellas are inexpensive in Tokyo. I bought one for about 500 yen at a street vendor and still use it.

I was wondering, should I buy a rail pass if I plan on staying within Tokyo? Or would I be using subways within the city? Thanks

A rail pass is really only worth it financially if you'll be taking long trips or traveling a LOT. The two week pass is 45,000 yen, which is more than you should be spending in and around Tokyo.

I'd say no. Within Tokyo, you'd probably only be dropping 120-500 yen on any one train line at any one time.
