To fulfill the requirements as a degree candidate in East Asian studies, I have decided for my capstone project to research the cultural and anthropological effects of Mizuko Kuyo.
I've done a fair amount of research so far and have set up a blog and a survey. Knowing next to no Japanese does not help.
However what I really need is someone who has seen or participated in the ceremony to talk to. This has been surprisingly difficult so far, so I turn here to a (new to me) resource for help.
I know it's a sensitive subject. However I really would like to learn how the unique mix of Shinto and Buddhism recognizes and deals with this loss. How the mizuko even came to be is not a big concern, as I'm not prepared to investigate emotional differences (if any) between natural and unnatural causes. Maybe next degree.
Sorry if I've posted this in the wrong place. I'm just desperately looking for ideas. . .I don't want to spend the next 16 weeks of my life intensely studying tea ceremony , but do have to fulfill a requirement of talking to someone who has actually seen one of these ceremonies.
I'd appreciate any leads you may have. I have been in contact with a few temples, but no one so far can speak English well enough to describe it to me. I've posted some queries on some language learning websites but have not had any luck so far. Maybe this tells me a lot about the subject I am tackling!
