～とする

I've seen ～とする a lot, in many different situations. I'm not sure exactly what it means, though.
I think if I remember correctly, with the volitional form before it, it means like "to try" or something, but I don't really remember. I've also seen it after nouns and such, and with that, I have no idea.
If anyone could give examples and different situations so I can see how it's used, it'd be much appreciated!

It depends on what precedes it. しようとする is "try to do". 君が王様だとしよう is "let's suppose you're the king." Have a look at the definitions:
