Hi,

1. How do we tell whether 開く, with meaning of "open" (intransitive), is read あく or ひらく? Is it necessary to learn lots of cases/collocations individually?

2. How do we know whether 場, as a standalone character with meaning "place", is read as じょう or ば?

1)
Basically, yes.

2)
In almost all cases, it's ば.
