Hi everyone! I don't normally do introductions on forums but since the welcome email suggested it I thought I may as well! 
Well mainly I want to use this forum as a resource for learning Japanese, but I see it will be good for learning about customs, culture, etc. as well! I've had an interest in Japan and its culture for a good 6 years now and to this day I still intend to travel there for a nice long trip after university (hopefully about a year), and if I enjoy it enough, maybe consider a longer (or even permanent?) stay.
As for the language, I've not really put a serious effort into it up until now due to exams and stuff but now I'm about to start my second year in uni, the time to travel to Japan is fast approaching, and I believe now would be the best time to get cracking!
I've started things off by listening to the Pimsleur course. Just coming to the end of Japanese I and feeling good! I know that even after all 3 levels are done it's merely a foundation to build upon and really just a beginning stepping stone. I also realise Pimsleur's style is quite formal and by no means colloquial, but it's certainly a good place to get started
After that I hope to get started on the script with Heisig's Remembering The Kanji and also work on grammar and increase my vocabulary. Naturally I'll be taking the JLPT and studying with the relevant books so I can quantify my progress and get some official qualifications in the process Hopefully you can all help me along the way and I can share my trials and tribulations with you
