Hi, I'm Dave.
I am 24 years old and live in Wisconsin within the United States.

I've started learning japanese a few of months ago(along with my wife) on our own, because we can't afford schooling.
I currently know all Hiragana and katakana, 30-40 kanji, and approximately 300 words (romanji/hiragana/speech)
I figure we should be able to learn a good amount on our own and making some japanese friends in Chicago and Japan (or elsewhere) which should help quicken the pace.

We haven't been to Japan yet but we are hoping to go within the next couple of years, but in the meantime, I've been doing a lot of research knowing what to expect. And when we enjoy our stay(which we will), then we'll get ready for our next visit to stay there permanently.

The interests I have in Japan include the language, culture, environment, people, music, anime, movies, food, and uniqueness of pretty much everything they have.
Interests other than those are snowboarding, hiking, photography, cinematography, web development, gaming, breakdancing, drifting, and drawing. (I'm not all that good at some of my interests, yet.)

Woah, you really have lots of interests.
You are lucky to have someone to whom you can speak Japanese for training. And you certainly seem to be in the right track. Are you planning to do the JLPT next year? Always good to have a palpable objective on the mid/long term. ;)

Anyway, welcome to the forum. You seem a interesting person, I hope you stick around. (I hope I didn't scared you 😊)

No problemo

I actually don't have anyone that speaks japanese as of yet... but as soon as I feel more comfortable speaking and learn more, I know people who know people in Chicago.

I haven't chosen a date for when I'll take the JLPT tests yet, since I still consider myself in the beginner stages. But I hope to get there soon, because learning is just taking too long. :p

Also I thank A.D.D. (Attention Deficit Disorder) for the many interests I have. Almost never a boring day. ;)

Irasshaimase. Enjoy your stay on JREF!

On another note, which web programming do you do? I myself type html, javascript. Apart from that I program C++ and a minute amount of Java :p

Really, though, enjoy JREF! Hope you make friends with many people.

Thanks, so far it's looking pretty good.

I have an intemediate level of programming knowledge in ASP, Cold Fusion, SQL, and Visual Basic, and am pretty comfortable with anything in html.

yeah, Visual Basic is one of the easier programming languages. I don't believe it's that common anymore for use at any jobs, however it is good to know when wanting to make automated macros in Microsoft Access and Excel. It's of course good for making any small home programs you might want to make as well.
